i have two cats. it tears me to shreds not knowing what will happen to them when i die. i tried rehoming them for ~2 months a while back but they're quite old and not very cute (except to me: they're purrfect) -- didn't get a single offer. after my latest depression relapse and telling my mum i'm feeling suicidal, rehoming them now would also arouse immediate and profound suspicion... my family knows how much i love them. i live with my little brother, and he'd notice within hours of them being gone. strictly speaking, i guess i can still keep trying to rehome them, and possibly should, despite how badly my familial relationships would be devastated. i've got this wonderful delusion that they'll only be in a shelter for a couple of days/weeks and some cat-loving fanatic will take care of their every whim and they'll live happily ever after.

we have a lot of shelters around, but i'm not sure what % of cats are euthanised in them. there's a chance my mother/brother could take care of them, but it's not a guarantee. they've given me nothing but joy, it's a privilege to be able to pet them, brush them, play games with them. i can't help feeling immensely guilty thinking about their undoubtedly bleaker futures. they have years left to live, if nothing goes wrong, but there's just no way i can wait that long. i would prefer them to be euthanised rather than go to an abusive/neglectful owner though.

it just feels fucking wrong. i can see no clear, guaranteed way to make it better.

What happens to my cat? Will she get sent to a shelter? Should I put her up for adoption before I do it?

btw sorry for any mistakes in this forum. i am new.

They might escape outside when ambulance gets your remains. If someone cares taken to shelter eventually or adopted.

I would find them a good home from country side or euthanize them if they have some sickness/old age and/or nobody wants them. But if animals find home easily from your shelters then maybe it is option for you? I personally couldn't leave my cat in a tiny cage (where they live in shelters where I live :( )where it would panic and be scared. They would need love and care and feeling of security when their owner is gone.

It is very hard to find home to old cats and dogs because it hurts to fall in love to them and then loose them so fast which is why people don't take them. Plus the expenses from sickness with old age.
They don't suffer for going to heaven a year or two earlier if you can't find a loving home to them.

It depends on shelters how easily cats find new homes. People can ask local shelters about it and whether they have anyone willing to foster care them until that (which may be only for dogs).

Where I live people don't think it is humane to keep animals long time in some small cage in shelters trying to find them home. I mean it would be animal torture and crime if someone kept their pets in small cage most of the time (or less) at home. Pet Cages are only for transferring small pets in cars, trains and planes here.

My cat might be the only reason why I'm still here. So I can't give her to a shelter. I've only known her two months though, and rescued her from a shelter. She's an outdoor cat so I hope she'll get along okay without me if I decide to go. But she might just keep me alive longer if I keep her, which might be what the universe wants.

Cats need human love when used to it and especially in winter they need home for warmth and food. But I assume you thought they would do fine in new home (where they can go out too) for being so independent. :)
