For the following descriptions a "o" basic level (not quite compensated) will be interpreted as a "c" or compensated.

In the following descriptions, you will read about the differences in strongly uncompensated or compensated adjustments (e.g. Eu+ or Ec+) vs. uncompensated or compensated adjustments (e.g. Eu or Ec). This tool does not attempt to make that distinction. Readers may attempt to determine from their own experience which most applies to them.

You can see descriptions of the 8 possible basic level adjustments for this primitive profile (IRU) in the paper The Sixty-four Basic Adjustments by clicking on the link. If this experimental tool has accurately determined your primitive profile, then one of the eight possible basic profiles should describe your personality at the basic level.

Primitive Type: IRU
The [IRU] is one of the most difficult Primitive Types to describe, primarily because of the extreme contrasts that may exist here. More so than in the other Primitive Types, the [IRU] depends on the guidance and direction of external events to form and mold the adult personality.
In the primitive state, the [IRU] is not only a very passive infant, but is also a nonresponsive one. The [IRA] does have social responsiveness and picks up and imitates the social-interpersonal skills of his immediate environment. The primary danger to the maturity of the [IRA] is that he may mask his autism and self-centeredness by his apparent adaptability and impressionistic social-interpersonal skills. His fundamental lack of maturity may not become obvious until it is too late to do much about it. But passivity and nonresponsiveness of the [IRU] is very obvious, almost from the beginning, and provokes in parents or parent substitutes a definite concern. It is rare, therefore, for the [IRU] not to be placed under strong external pressure to be active and responsive at a very early age. The [IRU] is not only very imitative but is relatively slow to learn externalized activities. Repetition, practice and role imitation come easy for people in this group. Since the [IRU] is not involved with what he does, he moves on to each new activity more or less as directed, without much emotion. Since he has less need of interaction (acceptance, praise and reassurance), he appears to be task-oriented and objective. Because he is neither hurt nor upset by criticism or correction, he makes necessary changes efficiently and effectively. To an unusual extent, then, the [IRU] can be just as good as his teacher or mentor. If he falls under the tutelage of a highly skilled person, he can become exceptionally effective. Thus when a talent exists in an [IRU] and is recognized and developed, he can become an outstanding performer. However, if the [IRU] is not placed under consistent external pressure and his skills and special talents not recognized, he can become a listless, withdrawn, autistic and non-productive person. The paradox of this adjustment is that it not only produces the outstandingly successful technician but also the most clear-cut person who has lost touch with reality.
The [IRU] begins life as an internally oriented, passive child who is not particularly attractive or interesting to others. Regardless of his intelligence, his maturation rate will be considered slow because he will show little spontaneous behavioral activity and little social responsiveness. Once he is under pressure to learn, however, he will be a perseverating but not particularly apt student. Initially, he will be inefficient and awkward but at least responsive (or willing). He will then begin to receive considerable attention primarily because he appears so helpless. Once he begins really to respond, he is more able to sustain his attention and interest than most children, and after a slow start, makes rapid progress towards maturation.
The [IRU] does not attract competition for direction and control, and once he responds to the influence of an individual, he is very likely to remain consistently loyal. In him, respect for and obedience to authority are traits that are particularly marked.
The [IRU] is relatively invulnerable to most childhood emotional trauma. He has the succor dependency of the [IRA] and as long as he is provided with this type of security he is more or less insulated from emotional shock. Warmth, or lack of warmth, from his succor figures has little to do with his adjustment per se. In fact, probably more confusion and frustration is generated in the [IRU] when the involvement is too emotionally demanding. By nature, he is not demonstrative and when he tries to be, he may be quite inappropriate and inept. He may receive unexpected punishment for reasons he is incapable of understanding. This is unlike the [IRA], who learns appropriate responses, but has little understanding or insight into their true meaning. Loss of succor dependent status before learning how to be independent and too much early permissiveness may be the most traumatic events for the [IRU].
Acquisition of language is usually somewhat retarded. The [IRU] is the type of person who has little need to communicate, yet may learn language quickly when necessary. He is the kind of child who suddenly begins to talk without much trial and error. Often he learns more vocabulary than he appears to, and is regarded as a slow learner. On the other hand, more so than most Primitive Types, the [IRU] suffers from exposure in an environment in which there is limited opportunity to learn vocabulary. As an adult, the [IRU] is often the kind of person who learns the language of his profession (or a foreign language) with considerable ease in spite of the fact he may not know the vernacular of his own language. He has a limited need to be understood and usually will learn only enough to get by.
Since the [IRU] individual as a child is obviously withdrawn, autistic and contemplative, he will be under almost immediate attack from outside forces to "pay attention" or to busy himself. There is a "trance-like" state to his passivity that disturbs the observer. The child quickly learns that his withdrawal causes violent reactions, and he easily becomes guilty and frightened when he has a tendency to withdraw. He anxiously seeks support from the outside to provide him with means to avoid the "trauma" of withdrawal. Compulsive behavior patterns, then, may be very frequent manifestations in the [IRU] child. These compulsive patterns may range all the way from compulsive thumb sucking (as a means of keeping himself alert and responsive) to other more active, compulsive patterns of behavior. A primary early problem of the [IRU] child is that he may lose awareness of certain requirements and he will resort to rituals as a means of remembering. For example, toilet training an [IRU] child is apt to be troublesome, not because it becomes for him a means of getting attention (as in the case of an [ERU]), but because he has limited awareness both of the need for toilet elimination and the discomfort of wet or dirty clothes. He does learn to respond to the emotional outburst his lack of awareness provokes in others, and he attempts to learn how to avoid this. As a result, if the [IRU] is trained to regular toilet habits, he is prone to make what is best described as a conditioned response. He eliminates on schedule and in the area prescribed by his training. Failure to maintain his schedule or sometimes even a change in his toilet facilities will bring on constipation. This tendency to respond in a conditioned way is characteristic of the [IRU]; regular, ritualized habits and procedures are most common in adults of this group. This tendency towards conditioned or rote responses may also produce aberrations. The effects of early fright (for example, dog bites, fire exposure, violent experiences in the dark) will linger for a long period in spite of the fact the individual has forgotten the original cause. Trauma in the [IRU] child is most likely to occur as the result of startle reactions. These reactions are most often associated with experiences where the [IRU], oblivious to what is going on around him, is suddenly shaken out of his trance. Little wonder, that many an [IRU] has profound feelings of panic when he starts to become autistic and contemplative.
The [ERU] develops suspiciousness and mistrust of persons in his environment who disappoint or reject him. And he develops suspicion and mistrust of all the events and occurrences that take him by surprise and startle him. The [ERU] generally learns how to do things for himself so he will not be hurt and ignored. The [IRU] learns to use the people in his environment as a means for learning what is right and wrong and to avoid the unknown. A general characteristic of personality types as opposed to [E] personality types is an awareness of a world full of unseen forces that cause unexpected and disturbing effects. The [IRU] is particularly prone to this type of "reality anxiety" but is one of the most active of the personalities in learning how to recognize and respond to the external world.

This cluster represents a relatively primitive level of basic adjustment. Individuals in this group are characterized by their fickleness, social versatility, and hard-headedness or single-mindedness. In short, they are "tough." Their social versatility is much like that of the era, [EuRuAu] but the social deceptiveness resulting from an ability to be all things to all people is most marked. The crucial difference between er*a, on the one hand, and era [EuRuAu] and era*, [EuRuUc] on the other, lies in the defensive rigidity or repressed sensitivity of the er*a. The primary tendencies of the primitive F are in the direction of inferiority feelings and sensual confusion. Since the er*a has reacted against both of these tendencies by becoming r*, his adjustment is characterized by defensive toughness, exaggerated self-confidence, and belligerent self-centered sensuality. In addition, since the er*a is still perceptive of, and responsive to, the needs and desires of others, he reacts negatively to these stimuli; thus, there is often a definite sadistic quality in this adjustment.

A major problem for both er*a and era [EuRuAu] is that these people gain much initial superficial acceptance because of their role versatility. They can also rapidly switch environments whenever they are called on to prove ability or whenever they tire of a particular involvement or responsibility. As a result, many era [EuRuAu] and er*a will be nomadic, opportunistic, and, except in social versatility, not particularly skilled; they are undependable and unable to maintain a sense of responsibility.

The era, [EuRuAu] described above, is relatively insulated and can be unfeeling and selfish with little guilt or shame. The er*a, in contrast, is much more aware of the need to be responsible and of the emotional reactions of others to his behavior. Consequently, if he is to be successful as an er*a, he must react against his tendency to be responsible and must mask or control his vicarious emotionality. The er*a, then, may be aggressively irresponsible and calculatingly unfeeling and cruel. He tries to prove that he has no feelings of inferiority and will exploit emotional relationships with others to further his own needs and, thus, demonstrate an ability to control his feelings. For the er*a, such behavior requires considerable strain and effort; thus, the era [EuRuAu] adjustment is much more tension-producing than the era [EuRuAu] solution. Alcoholism, drug addiction, and promiscuity are very common companions of the er*a adjustment because he needs outside help in order to maintain his insulation and his total commitment to the present. In general, it can be said that the er*a lives fast and dangerously, and sacrifices all for the purely sensual satisfactions of the moment.

The er*a does not have the competitiveness and suspicion of the era* [EuRuUc] or the er*a*. [EuFcUc] Essentially, he is a social being who goes along with whatever crowd he is in, and will follow the recognized leader with little question. He has no acceptance anxiety and usually is "one of the boys." He does not need to over-prove his toughness, as does the er*a*, [EuFcUc] in order to get recognition. He merely has to maintain his toughness to prove to himself that he is like the others. He has to keep active because, when he slows down, he is under internal pressure to be more introspective and evaluative then he can tolerate. He rarely aspires to, or accepts, positions of leadership or responsibility but he always seeks a social milieu that has well-defined leadership and provides patterns for his behavior. In this sense, he is a socially dependent person. Under strong dominant leadership, he can be fairly productive but he is always vulnerable to seduction.

The er*a also lacks the mechanical-procedural aptitude of the era [EuRuAu] and the era* [EuRuUc] . He does make some effort to develop these skills, but it takes effort and strain to maintain his performance; thus, he learns only under enforced drill and discipline. The er*a* [EuFcUc] is more likely to learn well since he is under considerable pressure to prove his competence; the er*a is more likely to try to escape pressure and to do better than is true in fact. The er*a and era [EuRuAu] tend to be psychopathic -- the classic constitutional psychopath inferiority reaction, -- than either the er*a or era*; these last are most often diagnosed as sociopaths.

What would the CIA say about you?

These are the explanations of the results.

If anyone wants to take it, you have to take the "primitive type" test first, then go to the "basic type" test, put in your primitive type there and then take that test. Wacky system.

"CIA Personality Test"? That reminds me of a joke.

You see, the CIA had whittled down their applicant pool for a job to just 3 guys. They handed the first guy a gun and pointed him toward a door. They told him that his wife was in that room, tied to a chair, and in order to pass the final test, he had to take the gun, go in, and shoot her.

The first guy just shakes his head and says, "There's no way I could even think of doing that to my wife." So he washes out.

They tell the second guy the same thing, and he takes the gun and goes into the room, only to reappear a moment later. He says, "Once I saw my wife, there's no way I could go through with it." So he washes out, too.

The third guy takes the gun, squares his shoulders, goes into the room, and shuts the door. The CIA testers hear two shots, then a whole lot of banging and muffled shouting. The third guy comes out and says, "Somebody loaded the gun with blanks, so I had to strangle the bitch!"

I feel attacked...

The primitive [EFA] is a very active, very sensitive, and very personable baby. Of all the primitive personality types, the [EFA] is the most involving and relating, primarily because he is not only very responsive to external stimuli, he is also very attractive to people in his environment and is the target of much attention and attempted involvement. A primary liability of the [EFA], then, is that he is in danger of being "spoiled," because his dependency needs are not only recognized but are catered to and satisfied. He has little or no experience with early rejection or, if he receives early rejection, it is possible for him rapidly and effectively to receive support from another source. Fundamentally, the [EFA] child is fickle, responsive, curious, distractible and inconsistent.

The maturation rate of [F] babies tends to be slow and somewhat erratic. This is due to the fact that distractibility interferes with the learning process and, in general, the child will abandon a "hard" task in order to try a new activity. Consequently, perseveration rarely occurs in the [F] child. To a certain extent, the [F] child must understand what he is to do before he can learn to do it; whereas, the [R] child must learn to do a thing before he can "understand" it. Consequently, the imitativeness of the [R] child is not present in the [F] child.

Confusion and diffusion are prominent in the early experience of the [EFA], and to make any type of adjustment, he must learn in some manner to organize his responsiveness before be can learn. The [EFA] child's development is further complicated by the fact that his social acceptability is so marked; many people in his environment will "do things for him," "take care of him" or "protect" him. In addition, the [EF] child is very expressive and his confusion, feelings, helplessness, etc are very obvious. The [EFU] child soon learns to protect his external dependency relationships because of the danger of being abandoned or punished. The [EFA] child, on the other hand, does not have this experience, since he easily replaces one dependency figure with another. In a relatively subtle way, the [EFU] child begins to learn to "satisfy" or "please" his external supporters so they will not abandon him. The [EFA] child, by his potential fickleness, forces his external supporters to try to "satisfy" or "please" him so he will not abandon them. It is this phenomenon that gives the "spoiled" or narcissistic flavor to the [EFA] adjustment.

The [EFA] child not only is slow and inept in doing things for himself, he invites others to do things for him. Unless he is in an environment that forces him to learn some self-sufficiency, he may develop as a relatively immature and dependent person. The helplessness of the [EFA] child neither frustrates nor exasperates external figures, but actually engenders sympathy, which is immediately recognized and responded to by the child. Any attempt by an external figure to discipline or control the [EFA] child brings other external figures to the defense of the child. To a large degree, the [EFA] child is a catalyst who precipitates conflict, jealousy and discord in others. This characteristic often plagues the [EFA] throughout his life.

Under ordinary conditions, age is the biggest "enemy" of the [EFA] child. The deceptiveness of the [A] adjustment often masks immaturity and ineptness until his performance is clearly inappropriate for his age and experience. In the early period of schooling, the [EFA] tends to be pampered, "understood" and protected not only by his parents but also by his teachers. During this period, the [EFA] learns to use affect for ends that are primarily his own. Adolescence for the [EFA] male is likely to be particularly traumatic because the more he is expected to show independence and self-reliance, the more obvious his immaturity. In many instances, the ability to use emotional manipulation becomes, for the first time, inadequate and engenders rejection and hostility. Because he has had little experience with rejection and hostility, his negativism and defensiveness tend to be more primitive (or immature). In addition, since affect or emotionality has been his primary means of manipulating his environment, the negativism and defensiveness are quite emotional. Because of his relative ease in gaining support in superficial relationships, he can be extremely hostile and rejecting towards those who try to discipline or control him. Reaction against authority (as represented by parents and teachers) is a marked characteristic of many [EFA] males. Running away from home, quitting school and teenage marriages are quite common.

Basic I*R*A (FcEcAu)

This is not a particularly uncommon derivative of the primitive EFA orientation, but is somewhat more common for males than for females. The primitive EFA is not only a charming and attractive person to others, but is very vulnerable to involvement and sensual stimulation. The ef*a [EuRcAu] has learned to be very selfishly sensual by repressing or over-controlling his capacity for empathy while still remaining a socially active person. The i*r*a, on the other hand, has developed empathy control and has also become mentally disciplined, self-sufficient, and an non-involving. Most primitive EFA individuals who become i*r* also become u*, in order to insulate or isolate themselves from social stimulation.

Obviously, the i*r*a adjustment is very tension-producing because, in effect, the i*r*a must constantly allow himself to be exposed to "temptation" without responding. In order to do this, he must become very complacent, find some sort of mental activity with which he can occupy his mind, and, at the same time, continue to perform his various roles. His complacency can be deceptive because fatigue, resulting from constant tensions, is very common; with fatigue comes impatience and a short temper. Thus, the i*f*a [EcRcAu] adjustment may be described as being "temperamental", characterized by extreme selfishness, irascibility, and episodic tantrum-like behavior.

This adjustment is most likely to occur in people who have been exposed, early in childhood, to a very rigid, intolerant environment in which punishment has been given for any display of emotional dependency or affect, but escape into an intellectual world was not allowed. The pattern is common in cultures where ruggedness, individuality, and group activity are at a premium, as in fishing, frontier, relatively primitive farming, and isolated communities. It is possible that the phenomenon of "running amok" may occur as a result of this adjustment. It may be quite common among tenant farmers in the southern United States. In any event, the i*r*a is characteristically stoic, Spartan, and tough.

Time to become a nun, I guess. Seems pretty accurate tho, especially the social aspect of it.

The e*f*u adjustment is most often resistant in nature. Unlike the e*f*a* [IcRcUc] who adapts to, imitates, and precisely conforms to his milieu or cultural heritage, the e*f*u is more likely to be out-of-pattern, nonimative of the general milieu, and more apt to have self-generated and self-inspired interests. Often, these interests are definitely foreign to his heritage and the e*f*u has had to be stubborn in order to develop and maintain them.

In some cases, e*f*u represents an intellectual or intellectualizing adjustment in which the individual has become indifferent to, or ignored, the development of social-interpersonal skills. He has not only developed mental discipline, but he has learned to be evaluated and probing. In both instances, it is the modification of socially conforming and interpersonal activity that differentiates the e*f*u for the e*f*a*. [IcRcUc]

Much of the time, the e*f*u feels that he is being creative; in fact, he is usually able to be productive at the level expected from his intellectual capacity. He is rarely an imaginative person because he guards against autistic tendencies. He is likely to be a very effective mental technician, and can be proficient in such diverse areas as physics, economics, and music theory. It is probable that some composers come from this cluster, and it is relatively certain that the best computer programmers are found here. At middle and lower ranges of intelligence, the most precise typist, machine operators, and stock or inventory clerks are found.

A primary characteristic of the e*f*u is his social-interpersonal insulation. The true e*f*u makes only the most superficial effort to develop social versatility. Shyness is often present, but in most instances, the e*f*u is actually indifferent to social pressures. Living alone, being self-sufficient and self-reliant, are non-stressful. Unlike the e*ru, [IcRuUu] who is generally self centered and immature, the e*f*u has a sense of responsibility and a genuine involvement with his interests. What he is doing is all important to him; he expects to gain security for the quality of his productivity. Since he is likely to be ignored -- he rarely is disliked and teased as is the i*f*u [EcRcUu] -- he becomes very settled and preoccupied with his own activity. He has little interest in authority or prestige positions, but he is quite threatened by any change of pattern, whether this be a move to a new apartment, or a requirement to change or modify his work habits. He usually finds his interests early in life and is consistent in his preparation; once established, he is stable and long-lasting.

Among women, this pattern will produce many highly effective nuns, nurses, and office managers. However, it is a characteristic of the e*f*u women to be more effective in the rituals, procedures, and techniques of her calling than in the nuances of compassion and human understanding. She has a strong sense of responsibility, but is often cold, detached, and overly rational. This form of adjustment, however, does not have the defensive cruelty or dogmatic authoritarianism of the i*f* patterns.

The primary problems of the e*f*u stem from his consistency and his inner tension. As indicated above, once a course of behavior is determined, the e*f*u is not only persistent, but resistant to change. The appropriateness of his interests, then, is an important ingredient in his ultimate adjustment. If his interest is inappropriate or unrealistic, he is inclined to persevere in spite of setbacks, obvious incompetence, or failure. The Greenwich Village poet, painter, musician, actor, or author who persists in the face of continuous failure and an lack of talent is an example. As he grows older, the e*f*u becomes more delusional and an eccentric, and an although he rarely becomes a true schizophrenic, he often becomes more bizarre, eccentric, and an seclusive; most always, however, he is able to maintain himself. Alcoholism, particularly solitary drinking, may occur here; drug addiction ranging from Benzedrine (because it makes him feel alert and active) to hallucinogens (because they make him feel creative and imaginative) is also common. Insomnia, restlessness, and nervous mannerisms are also evident. Headaches, produced by inner tension, depression in the form of apathy, mental confusion, and blocking are also common.

So apparently I have the worst one. Fun.

This is a relatively rare male but not uncommon female adjustment pattern derived from the primitive EFU orientation. In many ways, it is a primitive adjustment, although not a primitive as the er*u, [EuFcUu] since self-centeredness and emotionality are controlled without being repressed.

The efu recognizes that he has a tendency to be too emotional and too self-centered, but also realizes that he must learn to suppress or manage these tendencies. As a result he is tense because he is not sure that he will be able to maintain control. He IS very introspective and self-evaluative and frequently anxious about himself and his performance. The efa* [EuFuUc] has, at least learned to have some confidence in his social effectiveness and mitigates some of his inferiority and anxiety in social-interpersonal activity. The efu can really maintain social-interpersonal activities for long periods of time and becomes moody about his failure. The efu can really maintain social-interpersonal activities for long periods of time and becomes moody about his failure to be successful. This characteristic moodiness arises from: (1) his recognition that he should be more active, socially aggressive, or mechanically competent; (2) his lack of confidence in his own efforts when he makes attempts in these directions; (3) his tendency to become over emotional and self-centered when frustrated or fatigued, and (4) the guilt (depression) he experiences when he has not done as well as he thinks he should, or when he allows his emotionality and self-centeredness to get out of control.

The efu is potentially both, the most creative and the most emotionally distressing adjustment. External perceptivity and the capacity for empathy are marked. The efu rarely becomes directly involved with others as the inferiority interferes with direct participation. His primary means of sublimation is through the development of vicarious enjoyment. Persons with limited intelligence may become "peeping Toms," while those with average or high intelligence may develop various means of identification such as "Walter Mitty" daydreams or by becoming productive, efficient historians and research biographers. Members of the efu cluster are real sensualists with a range of interests running from the true gourmet, the artistic connoisseur, the collector of stamps, books, and butterflies to the avid baseball and football fan, the movie addict and the neighborhood "snoop."

A primary and prevalent aspect of the efu adjustment is stubborn individuality. A fundamental feature of the primitive U is negativism; the primitive EFU is the most aggressively negativistic of the primitive orientations. While the efa* [EuFuUc] mitigates his negativism by becoming socially over conforming and overeager to please, the efu does not make this sort of adjustment. He has to learn to control his negativism. In some cases, this attitude can be sublimated to the point that it is considered to be "originality," but the need to do things in his own way is stilled marked. The basic u or u* usually finds it difficult to conform, adhere, or be controlled, but it is the efu who finds it the most difficult. In well-organized and highly disciplined situations, the efu is under considerable stress resulting from the fact that he has a strong desire to revolt or escape, but has too much insight to be able to do so. He usually makes strong efforts to conform, but often discouraged because of his failures. Since he cannot express his hostility directly -- he is F rather than R -- his irritation and disillusionment with others are expressed by moroseness, bitterness, and cynicism. The. efu has great difficulty maintaining a consistent paranoid adjustment, since he rarely becomes a true paranoid. However, paranoid attitudes, usually in the form of paranoid depression, are common as part of his moodiness.

The efu is sensitive to criticism and has a very low threshold for embarrassment and humiliation. These characteristics are often masked by the apparent complacency that is part of the efu adaptation. There is so much conscious control in the efu that he must be cautious to avoid precipitation either his over-activity and dependency [basic e] or his negativism [basic u]. This tension state results in surface complacency that is deceptively calm and interpreted. However, the efu can be episodically very moody and is generally under more conscious stress than is indicated by his serene facade. Because of his feeling of potential explosion, the efu will go out of his way to avoid direct confrontation that may lead to expressed hostility or anger.

I haven't gone through this in detail but it seems very interesting. What's the lore? How is this associated with the CIA? Is that an actual CIA affiliated website? What's it for? It seems intriguing but I'm out of the loop so if you could explain I'd appreciate
