When the police call your phone it automatically turns on your location and allows all blocked numbers to call and message your phone. At least in Canada... not sure the rest of world.

I don't know for certain... and in the USA they might have to get a warrant... but the technical capability does exist to turn on location services remotely as long as your phone has a battery with charge. I don't think they can turn your phone on if you have it off, though... definitely couldn't if you remove the battery but not too many phones have removable batteries these days.

If you have concerns, you could turn your phone off and I think you're good. And by "off" I mean really off... not just in standby where calls or texts wake it... fully off.

From what I am aware they will be able to track you if you have your SIM card in your phone. If police thinks that you are in a life threatening situation, they may contact your phone operator to locate you even if you have it turned off.

I believe this is how emergency services can locate you even if you have not given them your address/turned location off

SIM card... yeah, that's probably the easiest way if you have a phone with a removable one. Some of the cheaper phones I think have them fixed (soldered) and are non-removable... but if you can, remove the SIM card.

Of course if you want to be non-trackable AND able to make calls... you have a dilemma. In that case, remove the SIM from your main phone and have a burner/backup phone that no one knows about so they wouldn't know to track it.

If the phone is completely turned off it does not transmit any signal and cannot be located in real time whereas if the phone is turned on even with location or GPS disabled it can still be located through the cellular network and other network data especially when there is a report of danger and authorities activate emergency procedures and attempt to trace the person even if accuracy is not guaranteed and as for warrants in the United States ordinary access to location data generally requires a warrant or court order but in cases of immediate risk to life the legal exception known as exigent circumstances applies allowing urgent requests to carriers without a prior warrant with subsequent judicial review while in many other countries including Europe the same general principle applies of judicial authorization with an emergency derogation in situations of serious and imminent danger because the protection of life temporarily prevails over full privacy.

I don't think they would go out searching like that. Unless you're missing for days on end and nobody has seen you, I would be inclined to think that for all they know you could just be going for a bike ride through a trail in said forest. I live by a forest in my area so… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I believe they can using its cell connection on local towers (and finding location that way). Turn on airplane mode and that would help.

Yeah—they can. Even if you turn your location and tracking off, they can still find you will cell tower connections; they also directly contact your provider so there's pretty much no avoiding it.
With that being said, they probably won't track you without probable cause (for example, you tell someone beforehand that you're going into the woods to kill yourself). If you're just gone for a bit they'll shrug it off.

This person was reported missing pretty immediately and had cops looking for them and tracing their phone. They were saved.

There's always a way to track your phone. They're very skilled at that. The last time when I called local emergency because of a fire, they said, "What's the emergency?" I said, "Fire." They said, "We'll connect you with the fire department." I never told them where I was, and my location was off at the moment. They stood right next to me without me telling them.

Your phone can be tracked by your mobile carrier and cell tower administrators, who may or may not give intel to the police, as long as it's connected to a cell tower(s), even if it doesn't have a SIM. Your location can be triangulated by cell towers which doesn't require location services.

Everything can be tracked , it's just a matter of how important you are at the moment.
