Hello I've decided against OD'ing and instead I have been thinking about setting myself on fire. I know it's an agonizing way to die but at this point I can't be bothered, I want something sure. My question is how effective is this method, and what can I do in order to increase its effectiveness?

Wow that's intense. You wouldn't entertain another method? If you're willing to do that, you should be able to do anything else really..

I want something really effective that will get the job done no matter the amount of pain involved. I think this is one of those methods.

That is the most painful way in the world to die. Just od on something peaceful man. Please read the peaceful pill handbook or at least sections of it that offer you a death with dignity. If you survive that you're in a world of trouble. Please don't do that.

Wow that takes serious balls and Good luck if you do attempt it...

Just know I've seen someone caught on fire from them cleaning there motocross bike next to the fire... oil with a mixture of cleaning products and caboom, stupid guy but still came running out into the middle of the street screaming and crying for help where we were all pretty much helpless. He eventually collapsed after what seemed like for ever but was actually 5mins people trying to pat him down getting water etc. But the smell and site gave me nightmares for years. I was only 9 at the time.

So make sure your secluded and not near anyone would be my 2 cents.

Tie a 45 pound weight around around your waist and jump into a lake. Surely would be less painful then burning to death.

please don't set yourself on fire.

But if you are dead set on burning though use an accelerate like gasoline. find an isolated spot where no one can put you out.

A shotgun blast to the head will have a higher chance of mortality with a significantly lower amount of pain. Burning yourself can also be botched, its not an infallible method. A botched attempt will surely incapacitate you for some time and can lead to the worst pain imaginable for an extended period of time. There are much more foolproof and pain free methods.

There are so many other effective ways to die than burning. You would regret it the moment you set yourself on fire. I really advise against that method. Seriously, stay sane, people.

Like others have already said, I really don't think this is a particularly good method. Yes, it will work, but you'll be in so much agony! If you decide to go through with it, make sure nobody else is around. I wish you good luck with whatever you choose…

Let's not crush his hopes if he really wants to go by fire because it can be done. But this method leaves behind the most pain and disability if failed. So you gotta do it right.

Thank you everyone for your valuable input.
Sadly I don't live in the US but in the Balkans, so I don't have access to any firearms that would have made my life any easier.
I'm also a university student that's under tight control due to previous failed attempts, so I can't do anything like charcoal. I need something swift that won't cause much suspicion if any at all. That's why I'm really leaning towards this method.

Ok, fair enough. I just don't want them to feel more pain then they already are, whether it's psysical or emotional, etc. But yes, I suppose you're right

A weight in water like ben suggested/hanging is a lot more consistent

I understand but there are people (about 1% of suicides) who choose this method so it has its appeal and even success. The nuts on op and anyone who choose this method have got to be huge. I hope op dies quick though.

No it's not. It's just a suicide attempt

I lock myself in a room made out of fire proof material without any furniture.

People often underestimate how painful burning alive actually is. It's literally one of the most painful things that could possibly happen to you.

It's a stupid idea no matter how you look at it. Even if you claim not to care about the pain, there is so many things that could go wrong with this method. Once you light yourself on fire there's a high chance that you'll attract attention. Even if you do it deep in the woods your screams are going to be so loud that you'll be heard from miles away. Then people might get hurt trying to help you, probably thinking that you set yourself on fire accidentally. If they do manage to stop the fire, or if you manage to do so yourself since you'll be actively trying to make it stop, you'll possibly be left disfigured and no one's going to really want to be around you anymore. Google "fire injury face transplant", you'll know what I'm talking about. Then cops are going to investigate a bit and it's going to be obvious that it wasn't an accident, you'll get locked up and won't be able to attempt again for a while. Oh and also you might go blind after this, so attempting again might not even be possible. If that happens then you'll be forced to rely on nurses, social workers and family members for the rest of your life until you die of old age wishing that you had done a bit more research.

Where do you get a fireproof room with no furniture... especially when you're a student under tight control? If you were to move out everything out of the room, isn't that suspicious? And if there's vents in the room...

There's a room with very few furniture at my home. I'll just subtly move them out of the way when everyone's asleep or away and lock myself in.

Are you against hanging?
I'm not really against hanging, the problem is that I've tested every place I could possibly hang from and nothing is good enough to hold my weight. Besides, I am really bad at everything practical even with detailed instructions, so I'm sure I would fail spectacularly if I were to try hanging.

Wow the least you can do is grant yourself a peaceful death, or at least semi peaceful like hanging or jumping. By burning you'll feel pain until all off your skin is burnt off. Sounds fun........ Not.

Please don't do this method.

You explained this better than I ever could have. Every point you make completely explains why this is the wrong way to go.

my friend died in a fire (involuntarily). it was such a horrific thing to learn that the only peace i got out of it was being told you're more likely to die from suffocation first. either way, a lot of super important points have been made here. If it's not presumptuous of me, i'd think the originally intended method was made in a reactionary way, which i can understand if the pain of living is that intense, but--as suggested--there are so many more subtler ways that are also more responsible.
