An extreme hybrid of a NEET and a hermit with no obvious signs of "mental illness".

Nah, just the NEET part. But if I had enough money to have my own place and not work I'd probably very rarely leave the house tbh (would be able to order everything online easily, including ctb stuff). Going outside is basically a way to be even more isolated than in my room for some hours (live with family). Today I sat on a bench and chain-smoked for two hours or something; no phone, no nothing. At other times I am alone in nature for hours without stimulation or activities. Feels like I'm blending in more if I smoke or pretend to read a book or something.

I always feel brain-dead in public since everyone else is doing things and they also have jobs and shit. I basically tried to activate my head to think about things today (using words to think is something I have to use effort to do, the modus operandi is images and short one-liners from memory or chains of logic or something, and I don't get to choose what comes to mind), and there are always the same sentences being generated when I do this: "Ok, GenesAndEnvironment, I think you have enough time to ctb if something dystopian starts happening." "So, should you kill yourself today? You don't have the means on your person rn.", "Your methods would only work if you were truly desperate, should you try to buy SN somehow?", "Oh, all-right, I am using the voice again. (x100)", etc.

No obvious signs of mental illness? I've seen at least 10 docs on this subject over the years, & those poor people are unwell... Maybe it's just harder to see them as "damaged souls" in the context of the soul-crushing machine that is contemporary Japanese society

I learnt about the term Hikikomori, (which is basically very similar to NEET) because of an awesome anime (that you should all watch) called "Welcome to NHK". Just awe-inspiring.

I have seen that anime too. I think as a teenager at one point I would have been perfectly happy with that kind of that lifestyle after being forced to be around people at school for many years.

I'm on healthcare and only leave the house to do errands, so yeah the label hikikomori would apply.

Honestly after having watched the anime, read the manga and light novel I think the light novel felt more grounded and was more informative on the whole hikkikomori phenomenon. Although the manga really fleshes out Misaki's character, it's amazing! The anime is a bit more crazy and comedic and I don't even remember the ending, the ending of the LN just killed me and the manga's was... Weird. So I guess I just threw the memory away or something IDK. Still, I seriously recommend reading both, especially the LN!!! Still love all versions.

Sorry about that. Didn't mean to sound like a "the manga was better" kind of person. I just think everybody should give a look to all the versions. Anyway, as for wether I am a hikki or not, I would be if I could. I got the NEET part right, but I don't have my own room, so while I never go outside (except to walk my dog for ~30 mins) I am around my family sometimes. It honestly sucks being constantly talked bad about and having them disregard my opinions and shit. Especially since I would work if I could, but I'm very dense and anxious. I bet I would be fired in less than a week in ANY job, and if that happened my family might kick me out. So basically I'm just stuck in between hikkidom and wage slavery and I hate it.

I want to be a hikikomori, but not in parents' basement. If I could be one in a remote tower with a good view, that would be great.

Let's create a hikikomori haven in the forest with music and booze and drugs

More of a hikikomori than a NEET, thanks to online uni. I usually go weeks without going outside at all these days, and even then I usually only go when I'm forced to.
