Therapy can definitely be helpful. What I suggest is finding a peer support group within whatever medical center you'll be going to. If you see someone. A doctor or otherwise, try and mention it. It's really helped me! It's basically a group of people who have had similar experiences with facilitators who have actually improved their lives. It's worked wonders for me!

I've never taken meds for depression but I think it would be worth a try. From what I've seen, it can and has helped many people but I can't guarantee because every one is different. For some people it takes trying out different meds, before they find one that actually helps them. When it comes to therapy it's super worth it giving it a shot (:

I think meds definitely help. But they need to be paired with something else that involves interacting in a positive way with others. Meds by themselves dont do much.

I'm not even sure what I'm on lol. But I know the meds weren't really worth much without others to talk to and support each other. Good for you getting help, though Hurray! I'd tell you to DM me to chat, but as a new member I don't think you can yet.

I have been on Zoloft and Wellbutrin for a few years now. I can't say it is a cure or anything, because it is not. However, it makes my emotions more steady and a lot less ups and downs. Overall it has been better and made it easier in my daily life.

In the way of medication, I have personally found very little success. I know people who meds worked for, but they sort of just blunted my humanity and made me want to die even more than before. At best I stopped caring about being alive or dead, at worst they dulled my cognitive faculties somewhat which was a bit spooky ig. Really depends on how your body interacts, so you might have to try a bunch of different medications before one actually suits you well enough. I still think it can be worth a shot on a personal level because if a pill seriously could deal with my problems upstairs, I would take it.

As for therapy, it really depends if what you're experiencing is something that can be managed with therapy. No amount of therapy can change the state of the world, your rent, a despot in power, but it can change how you think about the world and make it easier to persist in. I'd recommend it overall, although it can take some time to find a therapist that suits you.

Hope that helps a little :)

Meds dont hurt to try at the start, ive been to therapy since i was 12 im 20 now and barely stopped in February this year. Ive seen 7 therapists, and have been on 5 different antidepressants ranging from prozac, to pristiq, lexapro, zoloft, and wellbutrin. Personally none of them worked and ive tried snall to large doses and been on those from 2-12 months at a time to get full range effects. Never worked for me so this year i finally gave up on finding one that will work since i even took a saliva swab to find out which ones would fit me which led me to pristiq, prozac, and lexapro and none of those worked so i just assume im doomed and nothing will work. You cant really blame me though after trying for so long.

But therapy also didnt work for me. It kinda just ended up being a $20 a session for me to just talk to someone since after like a week i told them everything i wanted because ive made the mistake twice on telling them im suicidal and had a plan and got the cops called me on one time and then P.E.T. The other time ( Psychiatric evaluation team ) got put into rehab for 5 months and the fun house for 1 month. So if you do end up going to therapy just please be careful on what you say. From experience you can tell them youre suicidal but never and i mean never tell them you have a plan. Unless you wanna meet some interesting people.

Hope this helps :)

I'd say it's definitely worth trying although whether it will work depends on many factors

In my case medications helped a lot, but they didn't fix everything. Still if it wasn't for the pills I wouldn't even consider staying alive. I actually got no unpleasant side effects and regained emotions instead of losing them on a SSRI, also now I actually have energy to do anything. I was lucky, and it all depends both on a specific substance and individual's reaction to it. I highly encourage you to do research about specific medications before you actually start taking them, I wrote more about it in this thread

For me therapy didn't do that much at first as my problems weren't really clearly situational and the idea of talking about all of this to a stranger seemed terrifying. But overtime it helped me deal with my general fucked-up-ness. I know therapy can do a lot for some people but it really depends on the nature of your problems. Still even if you don't see anything specific to work through on therapy, you can still try and benefit from it in some way.

Mind that I have beed on *any* medications for a bit over a year (adjusting doses in the meantime), and going to therapy for a similar time. It's hard to say what it will look like for me long term but for now it was worth it. I know people who recovered almost completely because of meds and/or therapy, it's very individual but again, I think it's worth a shot, especially if you do research about what may help you the most in your specific situation

It depends on a lot of variables, but they worked for me and a lot of people around me, so generally yes. Not every antidepressant will work on you so you might give a try to three or four different types before dropping to see which one suits you better. As @orpheus_ said, they are a great support, they can give you more room to work on yourself, more mental clarity, more energy, you basically function like a common person.
The downside is that euphoria/steadiness can lead you into thinking everything is fine... Probably it's not, you still have to identify what made you suffer for a long period, identify your patterns, modifying them, etc. and it's something only you can do. That's not as fast as allowing an antidepressant to kick in, so my suggestion is to use the positive momentum provided by meds to build your new habits ecc. That's something I failed to do.
Therapy can help, I don't feel empowered that much even after going for 3+ years, but I guess that can be also dependant on therapist. Usually it's better to try than give up in the first place.

Hope this helps.
