I've read similar articles about people who have used machetes and other sharp tools to CTB.

They're brutal and seem to be as a last resort. The article I read spoke of how rare this type of CTB is. Usually the hesitation is apparent in the first cut and that stops people.

It's a sad world where people have to choose a violent release from suffering. I hope this person found the peace they deserve.
