im jumping off the 9th floor balcony and the railing is pretty high like even with a stool itll be hard for me to climb, ive tried before and my legs were shaking so much i could only get one leg on the other side. im gonna need something to overcome the si. ive heard people take alcohol but doesnt alcohol relax your muscles and reduce the impact to your body?
i also have a strip of duloxetine antidepressants will that work? another thing i read to reduce anxiety is drink cold water/eating ice.
i tried searching for another high place without a railing but its not possible. even my building roof is not always accessible.

I'm sorry things have got to this point for you🙏. I used alcohol before wanting to jump many times and I wasn't able to push through my si. I'd get myself there and climb over without being scared but as soon as I looked down I froze every time. I just couldn't do it.

SI is extremely interpersonal. I've seen the aftermath of some suicides that make you wonder how on earth they had the guts to do that. Things like jumping onto a motorised saw in a factory and splitting your body in half, how on earth? But that's just how it is. Some people will jump off a bridge the second they feel any sadness whereas the most miserable person ever haven't the ability to overcome any SI.

Reason I say this is because only you can know which suppressant, or whichever category drug you choose, is enough. And no, alcohol isn't going to save you from jumping off a balcony at all.

I think the pros of having alcohol before jumping to suppress SI outweighs the cons, if you seriously need to suppress SI. Of course it isnt ideal because it does relax muscles, but from that height it wont matter.

Here are some things that could help suppress SI when jumping:

-go to your local pool and practice diving from the high-dive

-desensitize yourself to falling; go on roller coaster/ go to high heights regularly so you get used to it/ watch those 1st person POVs on youtube of falling or sky diving. the more adrenaline junky things you do, the easier it will be to jump without SI

-when the time comes, just run and jump and dont think, dont count down or look down. you will never be ready to do it if you think about it too hard, just dont think

-drugs and alcohol etc

-if youre really scared close your eyes before you even climb the railing

tbh i dont know much about drugs and medicine but im sure something can help. maybe pass out with fentanyl or something when youre on the railing and then youll fall automatically.

wishing you the best no matter what u do <3

I apologize for hijacking this post and mean no disrespect to OP

Do you have any recommendations for overcoming SI when using SN as CTB method? I am thinking of possibly exposing myself to I guess "cleaner" smells and gurgling/swallowing salt water

IME, Alcohol hasn't helped overcome SI. I impulsively tried my first time when I was day drinking to jump off a local bridge, and I made it as far as the bridge and just drunkenly cried over the railing, just embarrassing, really. Can't recommend it but as others have said, it's case by case.

I've seen a lot of videos about jumping off tall buildings, and many of them don't look down before they jump. They sit on the edge with their backs to the drop and then throw themselves off.

I think this helps to overcome your SI. Just decide beforehand at which spot you'll do it, and never look down.

Good luck <3

  • Presence in Suicide Deaths: Research indicates that acute alcohol use (drinking shortly before the act) is found in roughly 30-40% of suicide cases.
  • Blood Alcohol Levels (BAC): Studies using data from the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) in the USA have found that 29% to 37% of suicide decedents had positive blood alcohol levels.
  • Intoxication Levels: Among those who die by suicide with alcohol in their system, a significant portion—often 40% to 60%—are intoxicated at the time of death.
  • Increased Risk: Acute alcohol consumption is linked to a 7-fold increase in the risk of a suicide attempt.

I honestly dont know much about SN compared to a lot of members here. I guess exposing yourself to cleaner smells could work if the smell was really really strong.

Some things i can think of that MIGHT help SI with SN:

- getting used to really salty things a few weeks before the attempt so it doesn't taste as bad.

-like you said with smell, smell something really strong while you drink the SN so it drowns out the taste

-potentially adding some sort of flavoring to it to make it taste better (i dont know of anything like that but im sure something works)

-burning your tongue with a hot drink before you drink it so you cant taste it

-putting the SN in a more approachable cup, like your favorite mug so youre more inclined to drink from it

-playing loud music or distracting yourself while you drink it

-close your eyes and imagine you're swimming in the ocean and accidentally drinking sea water while you drink it

-just holding the cup in your hand for a minute so you get used to it and touching it isnt as scary to drink it

-just pretend your taking shots of really poorly flavored alcohol

idk if any of those will help you, but for me i think they would. theres probably drugs out there to make it easier too. kinda depends if your SI comes when you need to drink it or when you need to pick up the cup.

sorry for late reply <3
