God, I hate Psychiatry so f*cking much... As someone who has gone through this in the USA 14 separate times - don't trust a damn thing anyone - Psychiatrist, therapist, nurse, technician - ANYONE in there says to you. Much like Police, they are allowed to lie to you, and they can twist your words in their reports and records as much as they want. The best thing you can do is keep as quiet as you can. Really - don't overshare. Don't volunteer any information. Keep answers as brief and succinct as possible - the only way they can't twist your words is if you say nothing at all. Even then, they'll still lie on reports because that's what Psychs do.

Even if you have the option to refuse medication - it's better to take it and suffer with it temporarily, then go off it when you're out of there because no matter what, they'll take refusing, even QUESTIONING the medication as refusal or "hesitation." If you want to get out it's not just about convincing them you don't want to CTB (obviously you know never to even hint at wanting to CTB) it's really about being the biggest suck up you can be, no matter how humiliating.

And I'm just telling you as someone who has been through this for 35 straight years - the Psychiatrists are going to humiliate you. That's what they do. They'll try and confuse you. They will gaslight you. They'll tell you something one day, then tell you something completely different the day after and call you delusional for questioning it. When they talk to you - just suck up. Just smile and nod. Act like a smiling little robot. If you react with no emotion - no fear or anger - Psychiatrists will become bored with you very quickly.

To give you comfort - every time I've been locked up, I've found solidarity with the other patients. They are your REAL allies in that situation. You might actually walk away with some new friends. The other patients will make the experience not so bad.

Also I'm assuming your female - BRING PERIOD SUPPLIES. In the US, they make women wear diapers during that time just to further humiliate them.

"Getting sectioned in the UK? It's like signing up for the most bizarre reality TV show you never auditioned for.

First off, your phone becomes your bestie seriously, it's like they know the only way to survive is by staying updated on social media and maybe calling for a Takeaway.

The great outdoors? Always accessible. It's like Bear Grylls' adventure camp but with less eating bugs and more contemplating the meaning of life at 3 AM on a bench.

Restrictions kick in only if you decide to go full ninja on yourself. Then, they switch the script to a more 'personalized' experience.

Weekly meetings with your fan club of mental health professionals feel like a weird board meeting for your brain. "How's it going in there? Planning any escapes?" Spoiler: Their care plan aftercare promises are like those New Year's resolutions we all make and forget by February so don't be upset when they don't put help in place

The staff? It's a mixed bag. Some are angels disguised in healthcare uniforms, and others, well, let's just say they missed their calling as prison guards in medieval times. It's a lively mix.

Life there is as predictable as a British weather forecast. Meals and meds are served with the reliability of a Swiss train schedule.

And the other guests? It's a social roulette. Some you'll want to buddy up with, others... you'll wish you had invisibility as your superpower.

So yeah, it's an all-inclusive stay at the most chaotic wellness retreat you could imagine. Hogwarts for the mentally adventurous, where the magic happens but mostly in the form of unexpected friendships and discovering the therapeutic power of laughter at the absurdity of it all. Pack your bags (or don't they'll do it for you), and prepare for an experience you couldn't make up if you tried."

update!!!! hello guys i am unfortunately still alive. i ended up being put on a section 3. they changed my medication to medications i was taken off of because they did not work. i get therapy once a week. my outlook on life has not changed and my mood is worse. i have finally been able to get some home leave. i have been faking getting 'better' and complying with "treatment" purely just for the sake of hopefully getting discharged sooner. ive been in and out of a&e to get stitches due to self harm. thinking of just slitting my wrists if im not discharged soon. its not a great way to die but fuck it. happy to answer any questions while im here :) i missed this site

No judgement. When I was on the ward I got a plastic cup out of the bin and ripped it up and used a sharp edge........ Can't think why the cut got so badly infected

luckily i managed to sneak in double edged razor blades which ive gotten past mulitple room searches and metal detectors. one of my cuts also got infected and oh my god the smell was horrific lol

Simply for being sneakier than me (not going to ask how LMAO), I hope your doctor was as patronising as mine! Mind you, I've discovered one thing worse than the smell of infection: the smell of honey dressings. They're really, really strong. Combined with the smell of wound ooze, I've not been able to touch honey since.

Sorry to hear the ward hasn't helped and that you're feeling desperate. It must be horrible having to fake getting better just to get people off your case.

It's hard to pretend in the hospital - been there done it. Do you have any indication of how much longer you'll be there?

UPDATE!! i kinda forgot about this site for a little bit so sorry for the delayed update. i was discharged on the 8th of july. since then i have been a little bit better i think? i managed to see taylor swift in august which was really cool. going to this concert has been really helpful for me to give me something to look forward to and to keep going. i feel like my mental health is declining again and i have been thinking a lot about another (and hopefully final) attempt. i don't have anything to look forward to. i absolutely hate going back to my life. nothing has changed. its just the same old misery. i reel really naive for thinking and hoping things would be different.

im just struggling regarding a method. i dont like the sound of sn or partial hanging. ive tried BDO twice and been saved each time. 3rd times the charm?? to avoid being saved i was thinking to do it at night time so my family i live with cant "save" me. or in the day time and just walk into the woods or something. yeah i don't know… i like the idea of taking a downer (please forgive my poor knowledge of this subject LOL) and just peacefully slipping away

Hii! i really wish i didnt go through with it. i asked to leave after about 3 days there and then got placed on a section 2 and subsequently a section 3. it was horrible, not being allowed my own PRN because they didnt think i needed it, restraints, being told im not distressed im just being stubborn?? the hospital visits and stitches, sexually charged comments from older men, being on 1-1 for no reason. literally awful. not all the staff were like this but it was a large majority.

Ahh no, that sounds terrible sorry. Unfortunately seems similar to other experiences in the UK that I've heard of. I think they forget your their patient not their prisoner.

yeah thats right! we were allowed nokias and a kindle that had parental controls on it. the only app we were allowed to use was spotify. i very quickly figured out how to turn the parental controls and just dowloaded streaming services, social media etc. and just hid in my room all day LOL. but it was very very boring. if i was really bored i would go and talk to the nice staff members or other patients that i liked. me and this one patient would plan escapes and stuff. she actually went through with it and manged to escape! she didnt get very far and they sent her to a picu after that
