I asked this question in the Guns/firearms megathread but I wanted to make a post about it as well for the sake of visibility.

I've searched this forum to see if this question has been asked before but all I've found were concerns about the barrel length being too long. Sort of the opposite of my question.

I'm looking at using the Maverick 88 security 12 gauge 18.5" to ctb.

What I'm worried about is if I were to try and stick the shotgun barrel in my mouth fully, would I be stopped by the forearm/lower barrel? Not sure what it's called exactly. Google images infographics were giving conflicting info.

Shotgun question

It just seems a bit short. Am I misjudging the length? I feel like I might be.

How far am I supposed to be sticking it in my mouth anyway?

i would stick it into my mouth as far as i could as that would get the muzzle closer to the brainstem. there are many shotguns with less obstruction than that one. takes a lot of searching on internet looking at images .

if you look at a diagram of the brain stem mouth etc you will see what i mean that the closer the barrel muzzle is to the the brainstem the more likely to destroy it.

That length should be more than adequate and with a shotgun, especially with 00 buckshot or anything at point-blank range, it will more/less be nearly guaranteed death, as long as one doesn't put it under the chin.

Thank you for the replies. After doing some research it seems this guns barrel can be switched out for other different length barrels if need be. You just gotta buy them. I guess that puts my worries to rest. I might go for a 20" barrel if I find the 18.5" to be insufficient. But I'm sure it will do.

I will be purchasing this gun it looks like.

You realize the shorter the barrel the more force right? That's one reason sawed off shot guns are illegal. They're also less accurate but since your target is inches away that shouldn't matter.

I know, I just wanted to make sure it's long enough to reach the soft palate. The closer to the brain stem the better...I think?
