I do wonder why the 'social' aspects of the site aren't largely (or even exclusively) member-gated. Not that that would solve all the problems, but having hard info be public facing and the rest be private just seems like a much more fitting setup. Inertia I suppose.

It doesn't matter whether you post in one of the private forums or whether you hide the contents of your posts with BB codes. Since anyone can register on this forum, anyone can see your posts.

Even if you change your username, it doesn't matter – it isn't hard to find who the actual user is and what they changed it to.

Nothing on the internet is private. Once you post it, it's there.

It seems funny to me that people are surprised or upset that someone shows their posts or usernames in a YouTube video. That's not how it works, people. Again, once you post anything on an internet forum, it's out there on the internet. Whatever you post, keep this in mind. Having said that, I agree that not blurring out usernames in a YouTube video is poor etiquette (arguable).

All this sounds very scary, but you don't need to be extremely paranoid, unless you have a reason to be. Just use common sense and don't post specific personal details that can be used to identify you.

It's about cost/benefit and who's out there to get you. If someone wants to get you, and they have the time, resources, and money, they will get you. If you just want to hide from creeps, friends, and relatives, then just don't post stuff that gives away who you are.

I've definitely made myself somewhat doxxable from what I posted on this forum, especially if you know me, because I don't care all that much, honestly.
But if one wants almost or straight up ~100% anonymity that's also doable, but requires a good amount of effort, including changing the way you type, your interests and such, as that can link to who you are as well — if we wanna go full on top-tier op-sec that is. I've done that some places, but it's rare I go to that amount of effort.

the 2 close friends i have and probably my sister would able to guess that i'm the one running my account. i don't use this handle anywhere but i think my talking style gives it away

i've recieved messages from people telling me they read my posts since before they made an account and i always think it's offputting to remember that guest accounts (aka anybody ever) can read everything you write unless it's in a private forum.

Truth. I've been stalked for years by a harassment service for hire. There's very little you can do about it beyond log them, film them, expose them, return their violence with violence and take a few of them out with you when the inevitable suicide occurs.
