Reminds me of a sci-fi film from the 70s called 'Logan's Run' where everyone was killed when they hit their 30th birthday. Personally I thought 30 was too young but what would be the best age if it helped it save the species?
It really comes down to the correlation of age demographic and usefulness in the logic of whatever encompasses their people (that of which I don't agree with). In capitalism though, it tries to get as many people as possible to produce for it, and I personally don't think it's going to end up killing people during capitalism's early digestive breakdown of humanity. In some governmental regimes they could find less of a use for certain people if they're too detrimental for the functionality of their own fundamental ideals of maintaining their society.
Your question is a bit too broad though, what do you mean by "helped save the species"? Because there are many different cases of how the human species can be endangered. If you mean what's going on in Japan, I'm not knowledgeable on what's happening there currently and I can't give a solid answer on it.
