I'm no expert but I would assume it would be based on a few factors.
It would have to be below freezing (0C or 32F) for an extended period of time and it would have to be consistently cold like a freezer lol.
Wearing warm clothes or summer clothes don't seem to really matter except warm clothes will extend the freezing.
You'd have to be somewhere where you won't be found for I think up to ~24 hours since the hospital can warm you back up within that time.
Once your extremities get severe frostbite that's sign number one.
The point at which you become so cold that you paradoxically undress from becoming too hot it's over but there's no saying how long it will ultimately take.
I think all accounts I've seen of people freezing to death it took a couple of hours (probably because they stayed moving which will keep you warm.) The one account I've seen of someone freezing solid like an ice cube, she was able to be revived...I don't remember her name but I think it was newer medical technology at the time. I think she was found after couple of hours or a day...something like that.
I wouldn't think this is particularly reliable method tbh.
Sounds like a terrible idea... The reversed version of self-immolation. It's possible to be rescued and lose your arms or legs due to severe frostbite. And it takes much time and the process would be extremely painful. Both time and pain will trigger SI and urge you to retreat. I believe it works only if you have as much willpower as Thich Quang Duc.
