I'm in a top floor with no neighbours walls and an open door in the corridoor to outside. The only way I can see carbon monoxide leaking into another flat is if it passes through the tiled flooring and the tiles are quite big unless it could somehow seep into the walls and then sink down through the walls. Is this an undue risk?

No, I don´t think there is a risk. But where do you want to light the BBQ ?

i have a large balcony to let it burn for a few hours. I'm already in a hot country, so can you wait until the heat dissipates or will the CO stop then too.

CO is sligty lighter than air. CO2 by contrast is heavier than air, so it can seep down through walls or floor. is gas capable to seep trough walls depends on whether ventillation openings are located on walls as gas can pass in ventilation system and on materials walls made from specifically quality of such materials, gas would escape easily through any cracks on the wall or floor. to be sure obtain CO meter and isolate room from external air, at least meter should be with sampling range up to 2,000ppm, if sensor reading somehow indicates that concentration raises and decreases, it's certain that gas leaking somewhere. spoiler: also if one one knows that you've died from CO in apartments odds are that upon your decomposition first responders who came to check you on neighbourhood demand due to corpse smell wil bel poisoned by gas given it doesnt leak and stays in room you died in

If this is your equipment I would say forget it. Read the guide in the thread I posted. Buy a high quality BBQ, such as the Weber Kettle 22 inch and high quality lump coal. If you want to buy a CO meter, buy one that goes up to 10.000 ppm. No, you can not wait until the heat dissipates. The coal must glow evenly.

I don't live in the USA either. You can get a high-quality BBQ and charcoal at amazon or at the hardware store. For your safety, use a high quality equipment, otherwise you could fail and have permanent brain damage.

It doesn't have to be the Weber BBQ I mentioned. It was just to give you an idea of what kind of BBQ I mean.

If this is a concern you should think about maybe a camping trip with a tent. Away from everyone. Should do the job if planned properly with a good tent and a decent bbq.

No it´s not just a bucket with holes. As I said, it doesn´t have to be a Weber BBQ. The BBQ all have a different construction / design. I think these kettle BBQ are very safe.
