You'd figure they'd be clambering over themselves to get me to shuffle off my mortal coil. I'm on disability and am nothing but a drain on them--they send me money, pay for my transportation, pay for my health/dental/optical care, pay for the soup kitchens and foodbanks that have to feed me...

Even though you might be a "useless" citizen because they send you money and pay other entities so that your body can be fed and remain in some minimal state of health, the government is semi-willing to do such things because it will prevent others who have jobs, healthcare, food, etc. from ctb. "Hey! If all else fails, at least you can be on SSI, live in Section 8 housing, and use SNAP and Medicaid!" (Put in your non-US equivalents here.) "We'll take care of you so that you don't have to kill yourselves!" But that "care" is made so unattractive that only the desperate will use them. After all, if too many people become public charges, the government will collapse.

They don't. The article clearly states that "more than 97 percent of this cost was due to lost productivity". It's not actual money someone has to pay. It is potential profit that companies expect to get from you as a consumer and (minimal wage) worker, and taxes that you are expected to pay in your lifetime.

but - a short view on this website and the invluded statistic could cause the conlusion that it really is about money.

i would take those 1.200.000 to calculate:

in germany for example there are nearly 9500 suicides per year

this would make 9500*1.2 million

but - to have a realistic number we have to include the average age when people commit suicide

i dont have this number so i would take 1/5 from the average number as a reference

so 9500* (1.2 million * (1/5))

and the conlusion is: it is still a lot of money...

at least we're lucky asylums arent a thing anymore. most of us would be there, with our social security/state government money going to the hospital. at least we have the chance to act upon our impulses, without fear of being locked away forever. most of us are pretty good at hiding most of ourselves and our private thoughts

I think religious fundamentalists stop laws for assisted suicide like in my country. I hope there will be a new government soon there are some parties who are pro-choice in my country (Germany). The highest court ruled very well assisted suicide for everyone.

Why do not the government let us die? In my thread The denial of human death I have expained why people live their lives in denial of death. It has nothing to do with money or taxes. If it is about taxes, why can not the homeless (and unemployed) without money have right to die? It is instead about that people are afraid of death, they will do anything to prevent human death, regardless the circumstances because we are programmed to live. The task of the healthcare is to prolong our lives. Christianity made suicide a sin - our laws are based on the Christian religion. Murder is the worst crime you can commit. Man has become a god. Death is not accepted because people are stupid. Human death is the worst thing that can happen! But I believe this will change in the future - euthanasia will probably be accepted all over the world.

The other answers about SLAVES is TRUE, unfortunately. Many of the governments (at the very top) have either been bought & paid for to be complicit in continuing a system designed by the diabolical (demons like to torture humans since they're doomed & want to drag as many souls down to hell sharing their misery as they can since they're sadistic freaks) OR many top tier country presidents have literally sold their SOULS to SATAN, since they're selfish cowards who screwed over all of their own Human species in exchange for deals with demons. What is most ridiculous is that these same cowards actually believed demons; Demons LIE and make fake promises. It's all a mess, and this entire planet is stuck DIRECTLY BETWEEN HEAVEN and HELL. We are in a Fallen world darlings. It's still exhausting by design. Some people truly care and want to prevent suicide from their good hearts, while others just use people's best years to drain them of all their energy working for slave wages, costing them their emotional and physical health, to the point many are too tired to pray, get to know God, or just have some basic leisure time and happiness. Then they RE-LABEL SLAVERY as "being responsible".

I don't know about you all, but I have been pushed to my LIMITS since April 2020, and recently close to my absolute breaking point (hence my "don't play with this fire" avatar). The CRUELTY from SO MANY DIRECTIONS compounded by TOO MANY PRESSURES, on top of "regular life" pressures, is even making me so upset that I sometimes frighten myself, LOL. I rarely ever get this angry, what about you all?

I actually despise evil in general, and I do not want to participate in it, but long ago I did dabble in a bit of black magick and let's just say apparently I was pretty good at curses & putting a rather serious hex on someone. I ended up reversing it all, since they apologized. Normally I'm a total sweetheart, kind, gentle, even loving... but I cannot tolerate the LEVEL and INTENSITY of BLATANT CRUELTY that is DELIBERATE or calculated. These MONSTERS who are purposely creating INTENTIONAL SUFFERING are BEASTS from the very depths of HELL.

I realize that evil just begets more evil in a way, yet sometimes it's just so tempting to want to ********* them.
Plus, it's true what they say about it actually being Spiritual warfare against Principalities & powers, so they just pop up through other weaknesses, as they are delighted to create CHAOS being sadistic creatures.

I know ultimately NOT to ever dabble in the occult, but perhaps this is just a cathartic fantasy that remains all fantasy?! We are all up against some hefty demons entrenched in many aspects of our illusions. They pull all the strings, the masterplans, their human puppets they own who are the same ones running this insane planet.
