They say that the suicide rate in the U.S. has reached an all time high since WWII. What do you think is causing this?

My personal opinion on this is the loss of community support. In the past extended families lived together or close together. There was support around. Now the focus is more on the nuclear family with little outside social support.
I think too life has just gotten a lot busier and stressful. Higher expectations to succeed in life and buy that big house for your small nuclear family. Once the kids move out and if your spouse dies or leaves some other way loneliness sets in.
I know not the only reasons. But just my 2 cents.

More people, more problems, less support. There is a breakdown in society and this is one of the results.

Less sense of connection, shift of wealth meaning people on minimum wage are often in poverty, anxiety and low self worth linked to social media, cities are getting bigger, more and more pollution, TV brainwashing, more processed foods in modern diet. The system is going through a lot of friction right now, I don't think the way we're living is sustainable for the planet or ourselves, a big shift is coming, but in the mean time there will be a lot of darkness.

Yeah, just putting on the news makes anyone low, the world is looking more and more like a shit storm.. Everything is falling apart, in terms of our planet. Politics doesnt work, everything is black/white, no room for a "grayscale" where everyone is included. Mental health is so stigmatized, its ok to have a broken bone, but a broken mind is fround upon and only seen as weakness..

They have really crafted a shitty world for us. life is nearly impossible. A lot of people have illnesses or mental illnesses as well, on top of this we have to make a living, prices on everything are sky high. People are isolated, we were meant to live in tribes now we are on our own in immediate families. The entertainment industry is constantly putting images out that make people feel like they don't measure up to the "ideal", they are poisoning the air food and water. They are intentionally creating illnesses (Lyme, Cancer, Aids) and infecting the population for control and to make money of our illnesses. They tax all of us nearly 50%. Which is robbery. Honestly life is just not worth living for a lot of us.

Competition. Before you only had to compete with people in your village. Now, with internet and being connected to the whole world, you are competing with everyone. You can never be good enough.

It sounds like a bad conspiracy theory à la chemtrails, but there are indications that smartphones increase the incidence of depression and anxiety, which indirectly means higher suicide rates.

I think there are a lot of external/internal factors. A combination of both social media, childhood Trauma, physical/mental illness, stigmatas and the realization of true human nature and the nihilism that overcomes oneself. Social media is the worst what could've happened to us in my opinion. Kinda ironic i feel like. Something that should've brought us closure, brought us more apart. This Forum though, feels like a fresh breeze after a long period of inhaling suffocating air and im thankful for that.

Because most misunderstand what life is. Let me ask you why do you make a choice? Where do your thoughts come from if energy cannot be created nor destroyed? Not from a 'god' because that requires adding to the total energy value of the universe. Aka creating energy. It comes from the non linear dynamic systems which you are intrinsically linked. The question you are asking is complex. Much like asking of 10 cups of water poured into a bowl which cup is most responsible for the bowl being full. Or if we add 2+3 who's fault is it that the answer is 5, 2 or 3?
The truth if the the universe is alone ,aka nothing else beyond it affecting it, then it has to be a quantum superposition seeing there is nothing to collapse it into certainty. Thay means that every universe that can exist exists intrinsically within our own. The 4th 5th 6th- 10th dimensions do not exist somewhere else outside the universe they are right in front of your face inseparable from your world. So your answer lies also intrinsically within the universe but it requires reading between the lines. Just as these words are not aware of the higher dimensional processes that make them appear. But if they were smart enough they could measure the negitive space between them to figure out their universes shape aka a phone screen. All higher dimensional processes leave a 'shadow' on lower dimentions and that is where your answer lays.

Unaffordable healthcare, people literally can't go to doctor in US if they have a serious issue for fears of being severely in debt, cost of living being too high and min wage jobs pay too low, no affordable (safe) housing, extreme competition to even get a basic job, disability is extremely hard to get in US. People facing more trauma, abuse, mental/physical issues and they cannot afford to be treated or helped. Less support from others and their family.

Because the internet is accessible to everyone and when you have that much knowledge and the negativity of social media plus life becoming more complicated for many people due to modern life and such it makes suicide rates go higher and it'll only increase as time goes by.

People love money more than each other, and strive for their 15 mins of fame. Nobody cares anymore, communities have died and there is no repect.

They climb over each other for what they want.. dont care who or what they hurt.
corrupt politicians who line their own pockets and work poorer people to death.

This once beautiful planet is dying and they dont care.

Thats just my opinion, anyway.

That's true. What with the internet being more prevalent, people are starting not to care anymore.

- People are living longer, thus suicide becomes more prevalent, when people used to live until their forties other causes of death were more prelavent.

- More death certificates are properly labeling suicide as the cause of death.

- Navigating in a never before seen in human history is the arising of "complex society" that is mentally exhausting. So many options, many news, endless information.

- Agism in the workplace. We haven't found a way to integrate older working people in to the workforce.

- Crazy work schedules that destroy family

- Family values are lost. Kids are left to themselves. Woman are working too much. Leaving the home empty.

All good answers and I would say that social issues, such as inequality, poor treatment of certain groups, marginalized people, economic problems, rising costs of living, are all major factors that contribute to suicide rates being higher over the years. As for younger people (usually adolescents and young adults), social media plays a significant role in the higher suicide rate for that age group.

I think it's a combination of social media and technology. We have the ability to be more connected than ever, yet we are more isolated. All communication is done through technology, thus we are missing the human contact with another person. Also, seeing all the stuff that everyone else is doing (successful, wealth, taking vacations) hurts our self-esteem. Plus, wealth inequality is huge.

There's another answer to this: As long as life exists, problems and suffering will also exist. Therefore, more people will want to commit suicide over time.

There are more people, and less money for the governments to help more people. When you have no support and when suicide is such a taboo subject, more and more suffering people are being left to cope on their own. And with the way the world is turning to shit at the moment I'm not surprised more of us are trying to escape it.

Labels. For example a personality disorder is seen by the public as a person to avoid instead of support. It's everywhere and what makes it worse is how everyone who contemplates ctb is automatically a sociopath or a narcissist.
