All good answers and also don't forget religion's influence is still strong, even in modern times. It only takes a different form, psychiatry and psychology (which are both psuedo sciences).
All medicine is art and not science. And religion is
inseparably connected with civilization and its development,
even rational atheists are aware of this.
Though one might say, once you've followed animal instinct and bred, it is the kindest thing at that point to eat your young. Put them out of their misery real quick.
