What’s the point of reseting/wiping all data off your phone before CTB?

I guess it is just a matter of privacy and shame. I wouldn't be surprised if your relatives or even the cops completely searched through your phone to potentially gain deeper insight on why you did it only to stumble over your meme/porn stash or something. Some people are uncomfortable with that, even though one could argue that you literally could not care less, since you are dead at that point.
But if you're serious about it, just wiping it would be relatively unsafe, since you could still recover the data, so you should just destroy the device. You won't need it anymore anyway.

I think KobK already hit the nail on the head.

For the most part it's kind of like why humans wear clothes. We might not necessarily be ashamed of our bodies, but it's just a matter of privacy/the default is "if you don't need to know/if you don't need to see, then you won't".

There's also the consideration of stuff like porn where you wouldn't necessarily want your family members and such to have it on their mind/be possibly disturbed by the thought. Would like them to remember me as the person they thought I was, if that makes sense.

With most of the common methods, if you fail, you would probably become a vegetable or seriously injured to the point where I doubt you could even use your phone anymore.

In my case, I'm trying to make sure there's as little as possible remaining in my life to look forward to, so that I have as small an incentive to fail as possible. So I will be wiping out everything.

Personally, I wipe my computer & phone pretty regularly, just in the off-chance that I die randomly one day & people try to look through my stuff. Having anybody read my manic diary entries, or look through my private conversations, just gives me the shivers! Nothing to see here folks

I guess for some people, privacy and their private life is very important and personal for them. That's usually what those I know who remove things like that often tell me. Personally, I don't want to delete anything and I won't. I just want the person that I've put down in my will to get my stuff and they can look through it, but I don't want police to sit around with my phone for months as «evidence» when I'd rather have the person I love aquire it and keep it instead.

It should help me be determined to die, I believe. I use my notepad program for all of my thinking and organizing made it my most cherished workshop and treasure chest, my second existence, which houses my inconsequential everyday nonsense as well as many meticulously edited articles, pretty much my everything. I couldn't live without them. It's as if my memories and self have been emptied out from within, which makes me feel terrible because of emptiness, therefore I always back up its data with trepidation. If I erase them thoroughly before CTB, then I will have to die. It can be said that a significant part of me had be killed when I destroyed them, and my CTB was simply completing this death, this belief may help me to escape from this world regardless.

I have no thoughts about privacy or shame, what's more, I have disappeared by then. Never lied in my own documents cause only I use them, I don't want what I left behind with frankness to be deemed disgraceful.

Depends on how much you use your phone but at least for me it has years worth of personal conversations, pictures etc... I wouldn't want my family to see it normally let alone if it was after I CTB'ed and they started to make assumptions/form ideas based on what they saw.

I'm a total layman on this but I'm pretty sure police usually has IT guys that can bypass stuff like password protection to get into your files. Whether they'd do it in case of suicide depends on the case, though, I think.

I've never given a second thought about what anyone will find on my phone after I'm gone. But I understand that might be different if others have more sensitive material stored there. I have no friends- so there's no unpleasant texts or emails. I've never even thought of using my phone as a diary, so no secrets there. There is the search history about suicide, but that's to be expected. Probably the one thing I would address would be my participation on this site. That doesn't embarrass me. However, for the privacy of others here, I will likely withdraw from this site. However, as someone stated above, I guess setting a password might be the way to go.

Yeh, but as someone as said I'm pretty sure they have the tools to crack it unfortunately, especially if it's a suicide case so they can rule out suspected homicide or whatever...

They also have tools to restore your data if not overwritten. Simple software erasure is pointless, the only two ways to ensure no one will poke around after your death are physical destruction/hiding and encryption. I prefer the latter cause I won't have to do anything when the time comes (except switching off).

ive always been a very secretive person, i just feel really uncomfortable with the thought of anyone gaining access to all of my art, the music i listen to, the type of humour i find funny, idk i just dont really like the idea of people knowing more about me than what i choose to tell them. even if im dead (especially i dont want anyone to have access to my notes app that contains like 5 books worth of venting and complaining lmao. its like a very private diary)

This happened to me lol. I even destroyed my old SIM card so I had to change numbers. I lost access to some accounts with 2 factor phone verification.

Relatives sometimes poke through someone's phone after they complete suicide. Then some of those relatives freak the fuck out and call the cops, their congressional representatives, Mary Queen of Martyrs, and Superman. Next thing you know, the NYT is doxxing the site owners. Doxxing is generally only done if you want to threaten someone with violence, but you want to keep your own hands clean. The idea is that some crazy neighbor of the doxxed people will go shoot them, or bludgeon them with a baseball bat, or something else equally bad. It is, in fact, attempted murder. I'm so glad the benevolent pro-life people at the New York Times are here to keep us so safey-safe. Actually, I'm calling it the New York Crimes from now on. At least I'm my country, that shit is considered harassment at the very least, and they prosecute over it. She ain't the Gray Lady anymore. She's become the Attention Whore.

Im going to delete all things related to ctb and maybe my porn sites bookmarks lol. Im gonna leave pretty much everything else. Not worried about what happens after Im gone. My only concern is protecting this site.

All depends on if you worried about family investigating or police investigating or both.

Worst case scenario, downloading a potent virus and self infect before ctb. I have an entire folder dedicated to malware and viruses, I used to mess around a lot on virtual machines.
