Sometimes I think suicide is feared and hated because 1) it leaves debt unpaid and there is no way to get debt from a person who is gone and 2) it removes consumers and low paid workers from the pool of people.

This is why elon musk has made countless twitter posts asking people to make more kids as he is getting annoyed at the birthrate reducing in first world countries. Actually from a certain point of view, yes I can believe it.
Because for society it would make sense to change and actually work on preventing the causes of suicidality, when that proves to be more cost effective than trying to treat the symptoms.
Even if we were more empathetic towards people who are suffering, solving their problems has to be paid for somehow.

I actually think that robots that could do 95 percent of work with a tiny group of humans existing would actually be a trigger point for very wealthy people to justify killing off billions, sharing the earth with only elite and robot servants and not having to deal with those who are unfortunate. A change that 1984 or others didn't even imagine. A future where the huddled masses aren't justified anymore or needed. Today they are necessary for production. Once that is finished then the choice pieces of the world can be walled off like gated communities but on a scale of "the whole Swiss alps" or "all of the Caribbean". Cull the non wealthy and inferior and shrink the population to a hundred million to hold all of the resources. Within a generation the old ways would be gone.

The problem today is that you still need. Humans to produce but the Giga Plant near Austin is the largest manufacturing space on the planet with the fewest workers. The biggest and greatest goal would be an ideal community of ayn Rand's society in the Rocky Mountains with only the elite thinkers and producers owning the resources and using labor that doesn't demand time off or work life balance.

The future isn't control, it's elimination and reduction with a rate to determine when.

Once the rate of AI robots in production, manufacturing and task completion exceeds humans and the production is co to yours and free, suicide will only be taboo among religious then slowly the view will shift as "justified euthanasia" becomes a norm and a "sacrifice necessary for the greater good"

And it won't mean societal collapse, it will mean a time where the few who concentrated resources before the great shift will end up no longer having to wait in line, have a velvet rope or bother to even wait for something special. The resources, views, history, natural resources, expriences, joys and view of humanity will change. Two generations later with population strictly limited by joy and cultural norms the mass graves will be remembered only with plaques. Great cities, slums, factories will be things of the past. Most needs will be met by the concentrated manufacturing and agribusiness, enormous commericalism, the idea of mass marketing will be gone. And with that loss the need at all for humans on the humble side of life will cease. Mass starvation will dictate that mercy is far better than a slow death and billions will be humanely killed.

This is the future because the alternative is sharing resources far too limited to support those who do own them all today.

Somehow, even I think this would be the future cause the alternative, i.e, Universal High Income, even though sounds good, doesn't seem practical. Even if there was free income provided to sustain life , what exactly would humans do?? 70-80 years is too long to pass it just by doing leisure stuff.

I agree with this. Look at how that bastard, Rishi Sunak (who is richer than King Charles btw) and his nasty party are talking about going after people with disabilities (mental illnesses in particular). I truly believe they would put many of us in the ovens or gas chambers if they could get away with it. Or at the very least have us break huge boulders in Victorian era workhouses. We are governed by seriously evil people, who aren't even trying to hide their disdain for the suffering and vulnerable anymore.

What I have to say on this subject probably won't be popular.

On Elon. . . I have no problem with him getting paid based on the value he's brought in. It's pretty hard to say Tesla would be worth what it is without him. What I have a problem with is what we do after. I like stories where the poor people chop off the elite's heads. More reasonable would be extreme social pressure for people like Elon to do more good with their resources for the average person. However, far too many people walk through the day like zombies for their to be collective values in America.

On suicide. . . I do think at one point telling people if they ctb'd they'd go to hell was important to keep people alive and working. I think that is becoming less and less important. These days, I don't think poor people are worth much at all to the elites. Sorry @sserafim , I don't think your suicide or anyone else's here is making a dent. I think now the greater purpose to discouraging suicide is to sell people on the idea that life has inherent value and they should be grateful just for being alive. Not only does this make for people who have lower expectations and can get treated like crap as long as they have their valuable "life", it discourages people from taking action that may put them in physical danger. Overall, a more easily controlled population.
