As the title implies, I am curious as to what you guys think causes depression. I think for me, I just stopping trying and put myself in a mental box. Part of the reason was outside my control, but part it was also an existential crisis. I felt like it doesn't really matter what I do or accomplish. I feel like no matter how big of a legacy you make for yourself time will eventually erase all that. We are just temporarily here, may as well have fun. I guess I am a nihilist is that way. The problem with that is there is no long term decision making/goals, and eventually it just all feels empty.

These videos encapsulates what I am talking about.

Personally, I have existential depression. Similarly to you, mine is caused by existentialism/nihilism/atheism/rationalizing/etc. It's made getting treatment impossible for me, since most of it focuses on more conventional depression.

I think depression can affect anyone, but some are more susceptible due to genetic predisposition. I don't have facts or statistics to back up this up, I merely base the claim on my observations and experiences.

The reasons any one individual can fall into depression are countless imo: it can be anything from childhood traumas to illnesses, existential/identity crises, loss of loved ones or any other event/emotion that impacts the individual.

Then there's also depression without any apparent cause. Or depression caused by weltschmerz which is despair at how wretched this world is and how powerless we are to change it.

Clinical depression, social anxiety, I have a suspicion that I'm autistic, loneliness, the fact that no one has ever loved or shown any romantic interest in me, life seems completely pointless and it won't get any better.

Of course there's a word for it in German. This is it for me.

That, and the general feeling of being invisible.

I particularly love the word weltschmerz, it has a Wagnerian quality to it. You can almost hear an opera of pain unleash the moment you utter it.

I think my depression is due to knowing the horrible things others have done to me. I think most negative feelings in humans come from this. And the cruel, hateful behavior is caused by false beliefs. Seeing people never pay for their cruelty just makes it so much worse. If people were not like that, then life would be worth struggling for. But humans are cruel. Some seem to think they are supposed to be.

Low self-esteem, having nowhere to vent, and pushing myself too hard. I got kicked out of military academy(I wanted to become a nursing officer) when they found out about my self harm scars. That made everything worse. Managed to get into another school but it still hurts.

My depression is from a ton of things. Shame, embarrassment, having my boundaries stepped over, overstepping boundaries myself, upsetting people, my weight, chronic unemployment, failing out of college, the list goes on. Everything hits me so hard and I just don't see how people recover so quickly from devastating events. It's baffling to me.

I am the same. It seems some people, or most of them, don't feel as much. Its like they never run out of energy. They always find a way to feel good. I am not like that. The damage that's been done is always there and just piles up.

What an amazing thread title. What causes depression? I have no reason to chime in here. I don't think I have clinical type depression, I do get despondent. So I am sorry if I don't have the words, but my feeling, having seen loved ones deeply depressed, is that what causes depression is "other people." We other people are fundamentally failing to be open and loving and understanding when a fellow human has difficulties in their life. And society (we) are generally uninterested in those things. There would be no severe depression, in my opinion, if our society simply cared enough to support people in every aspect of their life where they came up short, through no fault of their own. If we, society, did that I think despair would be so much less, and people would feel the chance to be content, maybe happy, and be able to live a life.

My problems are loneliness, health issues and the issue that I attract people to bully me anywhere I go. I just wish I could have peace. It's hell being harassed by people all your life and many don't understand what's living like this.
