A MAN who fell from the cliffs at Beachy Head is in a critical condition.

A Sussex Police spokesman said: "At 3.32pm on Thursday, December 27, police were alerted by the coastguard to a report of a man injured at the foot of the cliffs at Beachy Head in Eastbourne.

"The victim, a man in his 40s, was taken to Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with serious chest and spinal injuries, where he remains in a critical condition."

Police, ambulance, air ambulance and coastguard services attended the scene.

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We sent an ambulance and two cars to a patient who had fallen 40 metres down a cliff near St Bedes School, Eastbourne.

"The patient was conscious but suffered a head injury and was on a ledge so was lifted clear by the Coastguard helicopter.

"They then teamed up with the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service at Shoreham airport which took the patient to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton."

Y'all gotta be crazy to think 160 meters won't kill you. He probably jumped off the wrong spot. There's some rocky bits on one side and then a sheer drop if you go a bit to the west.

And you gotta be careful with these thread titles. I thought they decided to install safety nets or rails on the edge. That'd rule out my only option,

Can you confirm there is an easy way to get to a proper straight drop with no chance of accidentally messing up terribly like this poor fella?
Keeping mental notes..

but there's a problem, what with there being a lighthouse right by it. but i'm sure some clever roleplaying might deceive any onlookers

It is. The start of the cliffs by the school is too low .you have to go higher!

@ge0rge It might be possible to use topological maps to figure out the highest point.

There are people patrolling Beachy Head specifically to notice/stop jumpers and they are quite adept at recognising the signs. Just FYI.

If you're dumb enough to sit around moping, I'm sure you're easily picked off.

I don't think that's fair. Nothing "dumb" about being scared to kill yourself. You can't reduce these things to purely practical advice because we are human beings that have emotions and nervous systems that make our bodies do things we don't want them to at times when under extreme stress.

If you're from around and such a convenient spot is just a short stroll away, yeah, I get dithering. Nothing lost if you decide to do it another day. But if you're travelling from another country, planning this thing obsessively and minutely putting together all the necessary steps, you best be sure your nervous system takes a back seat.

I've been told there have been people ctb there since Christmas; limited information as they try a sort of media "black out" as much as possible to discourage others.

Makes sense but the tabloids are greedy for gossip couldn't imagine they'd agree seeing as it was widely reported back in June there were 10 deaths over a two week period

Totally agree. And they were like sharks in the summer - perhaps why a bit slow on details coming out at the moment?

It's an ongoing battle between the clifftop Christians, who want no publicity at all and the media who want every last detail.

i genuinely think that's the best place to do it.

does anyone know how big the chances are of you looking like mush once you end up down there?

I saw a jumping suicide in real life. They landed almost right before my feet, missing me by maybe 3 meters. There was no gore at all. Just a lifeless body. The eyes twitched one last time.
That was on "fake grass" though - you know that "decoration grass" that really has concrete below it. Not sure how different it would be if it were plain concrete.

If I dared to ctb by jumping I would be very lucky. There is only a 30-40 minutes walk to a very high place from one of the places where I live. But I'm too afraid of jumping. But I wish I had the courage to do it.

Why do people prefer to jump? Is it beacause they feel they got no other good option to ctb? Or do they think it's a good way to die?

According to my research you need atleast 4 secounds of free fall if you want instant death when jumping and landing on concrete/asphalt, if you're landing on anything softer you need a longer fall. I don't think you'll get 4 secounds of free fall from Beachy Head though.

Is Beachy Head like our Golden State Bridge then? A common place to CTB?
