I have a diagnosis of major depression so I'm worried they're gonna use that to obtain a search warrant and enter my house.

I am located in Canada and no, I did not have my house searched. They just took me to the hospital.

Yeah I'm just gonna say I threw mine away if they show up. What did you say?

To be clear, I did not get a welfare check in response to me buying SN. It was due to my psychiatrist calling the police after I missed an appointment.

I mostly just told them the truth, that yes, I was suicidal, and yes, I had a plan, though it was not imminent. I am not willing to lie to save my skin.

If you don't answer the door brandishing a weapon or have one in clear site of the door when you open it.. I don't feel like they have grounds to enter and they wouldn't have been able to obtain a warrant to enter for a welfare check.

I'm a man... and I was randomly thinking... what if I answered the door in a t-shirt and underwear with an obvious erection and said they had interrupted me masturbating... would they stay very long to question me?

Mine was years ago, with the IC SN checks. Bear in mind that I have very little history of mental illness or self harm. But, I was reasonably honest with them. I told them I had purchased SN in case I came down with a debilitating illness in the future. So- they knew it was for suicide but, not imminently. It wasn't a total lie. I would use it under those circumstances and, I had already had it for 6 months when they showed up. So- I'm hardly impulsive!

But, it was a bunch of fencing really. I wanted to be honest with them. I don't see why I should lie. Suicide isn't illegal and I believe I'm mentally competent. But yeah, it was a whole bunch of give and take. They asked to see the product. I told them I'd allow that so long as they handed it back- which we both did.

They weren't at all comfortable leaving me with it but I was firm but polite. They felt better when I agreed to be put in touch with a helpline. Who, as it turns out were much more manipulative and unpleasant than the police!

One officer seemed to genuinely care but, it was obvious that it was a box ticking exercise too. I suppose they have to feel confident enough that we're 'safe'. At least in the immediate future.

Personally, I don't tend to think that being obstructive towards them is useful. Not in an aggressive way anyway. Surely, that just makes it look like we have more to hide. But then, part of the way through, even I was starting to wish I'd just lied about it and said I'd gotten rid of it.

I think it does depend on a person's history too. Obviously, if there are previous attempts or sections on file, they are likely to be more nervous I imagine.

Wellness checks are not really wellness checks, mostly because they don't care. I don't blame them for not caring, it is just a truth. Police are literally required to do the wellness checks if someone calls them. It really isn't about caring about you or stopping you from doing anything. It's mostly about checking off their liability boxes so they can say they "checked" your "wellness" and you weren't dead or in the immediate act of becoming dead when they arrived. If you die later after they leave, they still checked their boxes.

yeah maybe I'll just be halfway honest with them and say I have it, but I'm saving it for that, or old age. You're right it's better to not look like you have something to hide. I don't want them to confiscate it though. I actually have two packages of SN I plan to save the newer one in a different location so there's no chance of them taking it when the cops come. The old one I don't care as much about but I'd still rather they didn't confiscate it.

But then again with my mental health history maybe lying and saying I don't have it is the best option. But then again cops are good at spotting liars, it's their career after all…

It's a tricky decision. I'm terrible at lying, so I didn't even want to try. I'm not sure what they could do though. Even if they thought a person might be lying, it's not like it's as illegal as other things. If we assure them we're ok, what more can they really do? Unless it's very obvious that we aren't. I get the impression a lot of it is about covering their own backs and, doing things by the book. One officer kept leaving to talk to their sergeant I assume- during mine.

I wouldn't like to advise what to do though. People seem to have had widely varying experiences. I expect a lot depends on the luck of the draw. Who you get, how hot headed or reasonable they are, how well they've been briefed.

Mine were very poorly briefed. They believed it was a kit I had bought. They claimed they had been tipped off anonymously- when it was obviously because Kenneth Law had been arrested. They kept calling it Nitrite instead of Nitrate. They even went to write it down as Nitrite- I was all over that- I didn't want the bomb squad next!

I was lucky overall though. They were reasonable and, so was the detective that got in touch afterwards. She even seemed pro- choice.

That was the irony of it too. I thought- in terms of statistics- they're more likely to commit than me. I believe there's a very high suicide rate in the police. That's a weird idea really. That it's likely that some officers will participate in welfare checks and even sectioning people I suppose and yet, they may end up doing it themselves.
