I am currently an inpatient in a general acute hospital for physically unwell people (non psychiatric). I've been stuck here for months waiting for somewhere to go as I need help from people to get ready etc. It's no life. I can't cope with the noise and lights here, and to be honest there's nothing out there for me anymore anyway.

I have two possible options. One is to ask to go outside and jump from a nearby bridge. Or two, ask to go outside and hang myself in the public loo with a bedsheet.

I'm terrified of both. And I'm not sure I could wheel myself all the way in my chair. My other option is to hang in the bathroom on the ward. I've tested how long they'll leave me for and should be more than enough time.

If you were to choose jumping, please be safe regarding the height - heights less than 100 meters would be more and more likely to only place you in more pain, than to end it.

Perhaps there's nothing out there now, but could there be in future? Remember that taking your own life is an extreme option!

Whatever you choose to do, I hope you will find peace. As for what you should choose, unless the bridge is equal to the height of a large apartment building, I think hanging is the better option. Make sure you at least have fifteen minutes of time completely alone though.

Long version:
To start off with jumping: success mainly depends on the height of the bridge. Most guides recommend jumping from at least ten floors (when landing on pavement) and even more when on water. Although, when the water beneath is shallow and filled with rocks you'll have less chance of surviving the impact and drowning in agony - or surviving.

As for hanging: personal favorite, has variables too. Ensure you have enough time and the ligature is fastened properly! You will go out rather quickly (10-20 seconds) when hanging, and if done properly with minimal pain. Your unconscious body will experience spasms though, which might alert someone or loosen/break your noose. Supposedly it takes five minutes at the very least to fully die after going unconscious, some say it might take up to thirty to be absolutely sure.

I think it would depend on the height of the place you're jumping.

If it was 250+ feet in the air with solid ground beneath? Absolutely jumping. If it wasn't clear that I would die instantly after hitting the ground, then I would definitely go with hanging.

Also, another thing I personally like about hanging over jumping is that hanging will more often than not be more private, and privacy is something that I feel is somewhat important to me if I end up taking my life.

Jumping might have one advantage. Once you jump you have no way to stop yourself (in case SI kicks in). Hanging leaves a little time to reconsider your options.

I have always had a fear of jumping. If I jump and change may mind after I jump then I have all that time to think about what the impact will feel like. Full suspension hanging leaves no time to rethink much, in a matter of seconds I will have passed out and won't feel anything.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm in a wheelchair now requiring carers because I fell 65 feet (20 metres). I didn't die, just damaged my body big time.

The jump would be higher this time onto tarmac.

Would they be able to bring you back after you hang? I wouldn't want that.

There is a small window of minutes where that is possible. I am not familiar with the exact amount of time, but its after 4 to 5 minutes brain death starts occurring. 15 to 20 minutes and there is no chance to be revived as a vegetable. But they can find someone who has been hanging for lets say 8 minutes and try to revive them.

Like many here, I think hanging is the best option, jumping is pretty dubious.

I'm sorry you are stuck in a hospital, that sounds really awful. Personally I think jumping is scary and I would never be able to get the courage for that. I hope you find the peace you are looking for.
