im sorry but i am honestly fucking appalled at the fact that nuclear weapons exist and that most people seem to just sort of accept that they're there. i do want to die, but i don't want it to be from hellfire raining down from the sky or radiation poisoning or slow starvation. is that really that radical of an opinion? why does it feel like im one of the only people who seem to be bothered by this? i don't fucking get it.

I've been dealing with pretty intense anxiety about nukes too, so I can empathize.

For what it's worth, all the claims that nuclear war would make humans go extinct or end all civilization are really not true. Even in nuclear winter scenarios (which, it's worth noting, are not necessarily accurate and rely on some suspect premises), several billion people make it through. For me, it's helpful to know that even if it's the end for me, it wouldn't be for everyone. It means that the things we do today matter.

The problem with MAD doctorine is that, it assumes :
1 -- Nuclear war destroys both parties.
2 -- Nuclear war is the least chance for a country to survive and prosper.
3 -- Nuclear states will have alternative ways.
4 -- Both parties are rational.


A nuclear war would'nt be the start of the appocalypse. However, with stupid/insane leaders or a "collapse scenario", these things may go out the window and a nuclear war would be the final nail on the coffin for humanity.

The point isn't that nuclear war is likely but just the fact that the end of civilization can be brought about by the whims of a few people is upsetting. With almost anything else, either the harm done is relatively very small or only as a result of many compounding complex factors. Disasters are complex and aren't a result of arbitrary decisions. Even a catastrophic structural disaster won't kill more than a few thousand.
