Humans may be afraid of present pain and suffering.
Humans may be afraid that present pain and suffering will not end.
Humans may be afraid of future pain and suffering.
Humans may be afraid of death - a journey into the unknown.
Humans may be afraid of suffering in the death process.
Humans may be afraid of dying alone.
Humans may be afraid that the suicide method fails.

Humans acquired the emotion fear early in evolution. Many people are thinking about committing suicide. But why do some people succeed in committing suicide and others do not? In the book Five Last Acts - The Exit Path the author Chris Docker writes that a different state of mind is desirable rather than simply thinking about it and that type of focus is sometimes experienced on a battlefield. The soldier has to find the courage in the face of death. The soldier has the courage to die. It is thus possible to overcome the fear of death. Dealing with the fear of death is much easier if practiced long before it is going to happen. Fear helps us to survive but there will come a time when death is inevitable, as it is for all of us, and the fear of death will then be useless.

I wish I had the courage. In my case, I am not afraid of death, I find death comforting. I am held back by the survival instinct. It is difficult to ctb as we are programmed to survive. I am also afraid of failing a method. I wish I could just disappear. I believe I will eventually reach a point of desperation and then I will be able to exit this world.

I personally am not afraid of death, not in the slightest. The only thing that managed to hold me back all these years was consideration for my family. Take them out of the equation, and suicide becomes a walk in the park.

I'm not afraid of dying too. If I could die right now I'm fine and at peace with it. There's no fear to something that is inevitable.

As the OP pointed out so well, it's not as simple as fear of death. It's the intricacies that surround it that are the problem. For those of us that arw ready, I'm certain that 100% of them would be happy to go to sleep tonight with the knowledge they would never wake. The struggle comes at taking your life at your own hand. The fear of failure and making unbearable suffering even worse and being helpless to make a second attempt. The fear of the impact it may have on loves ones and ultimately the ability to overcome that which we don't control.... animal instinct.... SI. It is ingrained into us in a way that very few fully appreciate yet. It becomes painfully and frustratingly apparent under certain circumstances. If you've been there, you know.

Most of the people in this thread posted they are not afraid of Death. Niether am i . i have no fear of Death. i guess most humans do have an internse fear of Death but many on this site don't . i do fear failing a suicide attempt and remaining alive with brain damage. but that's a logical thought process. once i work out all the details of my suicide plan , and plan it and practice it to the extreme so that i'll have extreme confidence then i'm pretty sure i will suceed in killing
"myself" which is really just a small animal , just a brain,DNA , just these trillions of cells i'm inprisoned in. i do fear extreme physical or mental pain. i do fear life .but i don't fear Death. i want to die
