I've "followed" several posters sort of expecting to get alerts of their activity or something like that, but I haven't noticed that it makes any difference at all. What am I missing?

Soul, thanks for asking this - I've wondered the same. I was thinking maybe because on other platforms, the more followers you have, the better you look. SS should not be a popularity contest.
