It depends on what you mean by 'best', and also what you mean by self-harm.
  • Do you want injuries that are guaranteed superficial and non-fatal?
  • Do you want injuries that you could also potentially die from?
  • Do you want injuries that are as painless as possible?
  • Do you want injuries that are as painful as possible?
  • Do you want injuries that heal quickly?
  • Do you want injuries that look as shocking as possible to other people?
  • Are you concerned about the wound becoming infected?
I don't claim to know the answers for items that achieve each of these goals, self-harm is not my area of knowledge, but I do know there are certainly different requirements.

I cut deep, but non fatal. I don't want to die from this. I need some pain, but not too much. I hide this from other people. I care about desinfecting.

My best item for self harm seems to be my own mind. It can be quite torturous and unwavering.

This definitely isn't the best method, but
When I was in high school, I used to tear open disposable razors and use those blades. They're very small and discrete and so are the cuts/wounds even after they heal.

The con however, is that because they are so small and flimsy, it's not always easy to grip or control the direction of the blade.

I use razorblades too, they work well enough.
For something even more sharp, Exacto knives and disposable scalpels

i buy surgical/taxidermy/dissections razors on amazon tbh. cheap and sharp as shit. i can go deep and clean and you know they're sterile which might be a bonus for some people.

You have to cut a slit into a toothbrush or the like to hold the blade.

I sometimes take apart full razors for leg shaving. I'll take of the plastic covering of the blade and fold the blade up to be usable. Idk why but I feel like I have better grip with the long handle of a plastic razor.

CTB solves problems if you pay the price with your life (very high indeed). Self-harm for the sake of is always sick, it's a sickness, nothing to do with you as individuals. CTB might be sick sometimes too, but not always. Please seek professional help.

i find self harm solves the problem of dissociation and gives me a sense of peace. i have professional help and they understand why i do it. i've done worse things to my body with bigger consequences and know the tools to make the sense of relief as safe and clean as possible. shaming strangers who cope the ways they do into silence when they speak to other likeminded individuals on a safe open minded platform won't stop the fact that people self harm. i mean look at the posts, some have used glass, i know people who used a dull blade and had less control over the mess. with clean sharp tools you heal better while still getting the relief you crave. i guess it's just an instance of let people do what they want with their body, giving resources to stay safer without judgment is the only way someone can possibly help. to claim self harm is only for sick people white saying suicide isn't is poorly written, you're sick if you want to cause harm to your body, through suicide or self harm. that's not a bad thing that's just a fact. it can be physical or mental but there's a clear craving to have control over your body (why else would you stage a death for yourself). no disrespect to your view, it's a natural one to be repulsed by the idea of someone doing something like that to a living body. just don't forget to consider where others may come from, with an open mind. we aren't forcing anyone to do anything, just making knowledgeable statements to make something like that cleaner with lower risk of something going awry. ❤️ stay at peace, and again i mean no disrespect.

Scalpels seem good you have to be incredibly careful. It's too easy to cut too deep. I don't know if I would be able to do it; I'll stick with my razor blades for now.

I used razor blades, boxcutters. Those work well.

Ive also used broken glass and metal. They're okay.

In a psych ward I used plastic tabs off the peanut butter cups.

The worst injury ive given myself was using a dresser. I slammed my foot into it over and over again until I broke my bone. 2/10 do not recommend. I had residual pain for a year and had to see orthopedic specialists to fix it.

Now I just drink and smoke to self harm.

Medical grade scalpels. Either the blade alone or a disposable version with a plastic handle. Easy to take from work for me and easy to order from reputable places online

I use the tip of a custom butterfly knife that I sharpen daily, but I don't really cut. My mom is a borderline helicopter parent, so I can't really afford to without getting caught quick or making it look like an accident.

Cheap multi-purpose lighter. The one shaped like a wand. I turned it on high and tilted it so the flame would heat the plastic and would press it against my arm. One scar faded and the other was deep enough to leave enough scar tissue to get noticed. Hurt plenty for me and I'm a wuss for knives so I didn't want to touch em. Wish I could do it more often but I live around family now.

I'm a (laughable) newbie to SH :haha:. It only started at the beginning of Lockdown but it's become so useful, in terms of creating physical pain to distract (too briefly) from the emotional pain: I've been using safety pins to carve words into my skin. It burns and sometimes bleeds. I give myself a week or two (if I'm still around) before the shiny Exacto blades I've bought will come into play...

Guys thank you for advices.

You made me nostalgic. I miss so bad time when i started to SH. I miss so my superficial cuts. I would do anything on this world to go back into that time and to don't do mistakes which led me to this state. I had certian problems then, they were solvable, i was full of life, the most important thing i was healthy. Then shits happened.
Be aware that SH become worse over time. I have been on and off SH for 4.5 years. I started with superficial cuts but i ended up doing cuts which needed to be stiched. But in my case my life situation got worse in the past few years, especialy in 2019. It caused worsening of cuting. It is actually reason why i cut at all now (i mean my damage from psych drugs). But other poeple also say their cuts gets worse over time. It an interesanting phenomenom.
