Elon Musk promised that the era of AI means the era of abundance. I think the point he didn't mention was the fact that this abundance only applies to the bankaccounts of billionaires who own AI companies.
I don't know that many people who use AI chatbots in real life. Most of my friends boycott it.
I find it interesting. We are sort of in a stagflation. The inflation is rising and the economy is stagnating (In Germany completely) and in the US most sectors if we exclude the companies that benefit from the AI hype.
The idea is intelligence won't be scarce anymore. We all will be able to access it and it will be pretty cheap. The whole thing is too complex to lay it out completely.
Who will have money if the usual way to get money by investing time in your education is worthless?
The promise abundance sounds utopian. But actually why don't we see abundance thus far? Data centers need massive energy supplies and there are shortages of certain processors/materials. Technology rather becomes more expensive instead of getting cheaper. One argument is this is only a shortterm effect. And in the longrun the increased productivity will contribute to massive economic growth.
How will work look like in the AI age? I could imagine the way the workflow is changed could have massively negative influence on the mental health of employees. The interesting parts of work is replaced while you still have to do the tedious stuff like controlling and factchecking.
There are like insane quotes by tech billionaires. Here is one. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, expressed concern regarding the token usage of highly paid engineers. He suggests that an engineer with an annual salary of $500,000 should spend at least $250,000 on AI tokens.
Honestly, I don't know how that shall be possible. I imagine this number to be pretty insane. Does this really increase the productivity? When I read studies the findings about the increase in productivity by the usage of generative AI is often ambigious.
