Hello everyone. So my life's been pretty shit for the past 3 years and I decided to kill myself a few weeks ago. I found this website about a week ago to figure things out and deduced that partial hanging would be my best bet. For the past 4 days or so I'd practice for about 10 minutes every night to see if I could try to black out but I had no success. I was just hurting my windpipe. My material is a necktie (recommended by hanging megathread). I used a slipknot to create the noose and used a buntline hitch knot to tie the necktie to my wardrobe bar to hang from.

A couple hours ago I decided to practice again. I did it a little different though. Instead of easing myself in and looking straight ahead I looked down and relaxed my entire body. In maybe 5 seconds max I was out. There was no slowly blacking out. No dizziness. One second I was conscious, the next second I was gone. I had a little "life flashes before your eyes" type thing and when I came to I was lying on the floor of my closet. I forgot who I was for a second but when I realized what had happened I started freaking out(I had only intended to practice and wasn't expecting at all to become unconscious, especially so quickly and effortlessly).

Anyway, what had happened is my necktie had broke. It tore in between the two knots. I'd been using this same tie the past few days so maybe it was becoming weak but the fact that it broke just a few seconds after I fell unconscious makes me think that neckties are not suitable for hanging. They can't support your weight.

If the tie had not tore, I'd be dead right now, right? I was completely unconscious and didn't come to until I was on the floor. I'm pretty sure that if I'm going to kill myself, this is the right method. So I'm done practicing. When I'm ready, I'm hanging myself for good. But I can't risk failing. Thank God the tie tore almost immediately so that I did not suffer any injuries. So please, could someone tell me what is the proper material that I need to use to get the same effect but that can also sustain my entire weight. If anyone has any other advice or questions for me, please share/ask. Thank you.

Hey man, I'm sorry things are not working out as you had planned. What happened these past 3 years that made you want to ctb? Just curious.

Do you suffer from any mental illness? Lost a loved one? Or maybe a job?

I keep hearing about ties breaking and it makes me worried because I wanted to use a tie.

I suffered a traumatic event a few years back that I don't publicly share. I've had bad depression ever since and have made a series of bad decisions. Sorry but I'd rather not get specific.

Yeah I was hoping that a tie would work. The fabric doesn't hurt your skin and they're easy to get a hold of. I don't think they're strong enough, however.

I'm using a simple rope either alone or with a towel under it. You can always buy like foam padding from an arts and crafts store or Home Depot too to put between your neck and the noose. Honestly, I've thought about it and a few seconds of pain/discomfort is worth not risking the whole thing breaking and you ending up brain damaged. If I were you I'd choose something more sturdy like a rope and just buy some padding to put under it, or a towel.

Ok that sounds logical. Is there a specific type of rope I should get or would any do? Can I be confident that a rope will sustain my weight and not break during the hanging like the tie did?

What is your weight? And how prominent (visible) your arteries are if you look in a mirror?
Congrats on finding your sweet spot. Not all of us are that lucky.

Same thing happened to me! You could never tell when you were about to become unconscious. But I can't say that you would die if your tie hadn't broke. I was out for like 20 seconds but woke up not being able to breathe. Still don't know how I became conscious.

This is the type of rope that I have been using. Its been working well so far and has supported my full weight. Its a bit long but its climbers rope so it should be. My set up is that with a thin washcloth between it and the front of my neck, just thin enough to not cause discomfort but still able to be pressing the arteries. If you do end up getting it it should come in a flat square white plastic bag so it isn't very obvious to what it is unless someone picks it up.

My weight is 185 lbs (84 kgs). My height is 6'2" for that matter. I just looked in a mirror and I couldn't see the outline of my arteries so I'd say not prominent.

That's odd. What position were you using? Somehow your carotids must have gotten free to be able to supply your brain with oxygen to regain consciousness.

Static climbing rope has been recommended. It will definitely support your weight and will not break.

Getting any thick enough rope should do it. Probably at least 3/4 inches thick. I think pretty much any rope will do, but nylon double braided is the strongest, you can just run to home depot and buy some thick nylon double braided rope and there will be almost no chance it will break in my opinion.

And this was partial? Were your feet on the floor? How about bathrobe belt?
