Not a fan of hanging, but as someone who tried it before, the socks are needed to ensure the blockage of carotid arteries.
By placing them in the right place you ensure the arteries are blocked first so you would fall unconscious as fast as possible. Just an extra padding to make the process quicker and less painful.

ah. yes that's kinda what i thought, i was just making sure i had it right. thanks.

ideally a towel would be even better tho, wouldn't it?
since it's wider and longer.
and if it's TOO big, then it can be cut into the perfect size, whereas the socks don't cover the full neck, and they can easily slide out of place.

The socks is a good and easy example because it is a two separate pieces of cloth put around the rope at the place it touches your carotid arteries, which are responsible for making your brain staying conscious. Using the full, uncut towel will put the same pressure on your trachea which isn't a pleasant experience.
You can use whatever cloth you have. Just make sure it does put pressure on the carotids and only the carotids, not a trachea. Choking to death is extremely unpleasant. Saying this as someone who nearly died by choking on a fucking tomato… With the pressure it's 1000% worse.
