Hello all. I ordered SN online. I got a 3 year old box, with 2 more years of life on it. The SN inside is caked solid. Is this still usable, or do I have to buy elsewhere? Thanks.

Test it with your blood.

i don't want to do that... because if someone can confirm to me caked means contaminated, I would return it and get my money back and buy elsewhere.... i might want to ctb.... but i will ctb as a true empowered consumer... :)

Likely that oxygen somehow entered the container, turning nitrite to nitrate.

There is something most members on SaSU don't understand : according to the PPH, SN has an infinite shelf life when properly stored.
Properly stored for SN means not a temperature above 300°C and more importantly, zero contact with air to avoid oxidation.
Zero contact with air means you don't open it and your source isn't a scam.

Imo there is no other way than testing it with your blood to know if it's usable. The fact that it's caked doesn't mean anything and is natural.
Idk where people saw that it would be a proof it became nitrate, there is absolutely no evidence for that.

if you spend a full day breathing (exhaling co2) directly on sodium nitrite, it turns into sodium nitrote.

I wonder if it came from a certain seller, because it seemed like some of the packages from certain sources had either come from a bad batch, or the container had been opened by customs and re-sealed improperly (or damaged during shipping) which would spoil the nitrite and give it a yellow cakey texture.

This is why I am super cautious and will be testing mine a couple of times to be certain. Because it seems like some of the SN that's been sold lately is either impure or improperly sealed.

The sn I used was resealed with black tape and was lumpy and yellow

Hard to tell. I bought the best quality from US site and it still hardened a little, but a few light shakes and it totally frees up again. If yours is heavily/solid caked then not sure what to tell you on that condition.

I don't want to create a new thread, so I'll ask here if you don't mind.

I have 3 SN bags and one of them has been opened more than two weeks ago - can I still use it or should I dispose of it? because I would not like to drink nitrate instead of nitrite.

And I also have bags, one of which is with lumps, and the other without lumps. Do you think they should be of the same quality, or is it better to use one that is lump-free?

For me this is a big reason why I have not already bought it. Not sure if I will need it in the next 2 years

Probably the best way store SN is to put the sealed bottle in larger plastic bag and vacuum pump it to remove any oxygen . Then put that in larger dark plastic trash bag to seal out light.

There are many even more elaborate vacuum pump products to imo seal out all oxygen or air. that way no air or oxygen can get to the SN to turn it into nitrate.
