What does the change of color in blood after adding Sodium Nitrite into it truly mean? Does it tell you that it is indeed Nitrite and not Nitrate, or does it tell you that it is Nitrite of high purity (>98%)?

So i did a blood test today and it turned dark brown immediately. Does this mean my SN is still Nitrite and not Nitrate, or does this mean my SN is indeed Nitrite and is pure enough (>98%)?

Im not sure if it gives away the purity but mine turned dark brown as well instantly. I also tasted it out of curiosity and it was disgustingly salty so I'm quite sure mine is the same batch I've seen others ctb with here. If the bottle doesn't say then you might want to try other methods of testing the purity.

The thing is Sodium Nitrate is also salt and i don't know whether it turns blood dark brown as well. It says 99% purity, i just want to be sure. How to distinguish Nitrate and Nitrite?

I see. I may not know but since the people here have been testing their SN with blood I'd hope that it confirms its not nitrate.
The aquarium test may be best for you if you're concerned :(

Oxygen rich blood is bright red (which is why venous blood is darker than arterial blood). SN interferes with the oxygen carrying ability of blood, and that makes it dark and the skin bluish.

People do blood test of SN because it is simple, and it gives some reassurance. It definetly can not determine purity. Answering question about using it to differentiate between nitrate and nitrite would require someone with better chemistry knowledge than mine, or someone having both and willing to experiment.
