I think about this too. Maybe save tax/important docs to make things easier for whoever you leave behind. Do you have family or a spouse?

Depends.
Your family or friends, maybe even the police, will likely gain access to your devices after you've gone.
If you have some stuff you'd rather not have anyone see, I'd erase the data, or at least delete the files you don't want to be known about.
Personally, I plan on deleting everything but the notes app upon my departure. My personal life will die with me.

@LoveMePlease I see. Maybe they would like to have things of yours photos etc to remember you by. Are your files organized?

I wonder how likely or good they are at cracking password protected devices. I am kinda afraid of wiping my things but then failing or backing off and then having to stay without my files.

It's mostly irrelevant. Once you're dead, you're forever free of the consequences of whatever was on those devices. Whether it's a video of you being bullied, compromising Facebook posts, or tentacle porn, you're not around to feel the shame or embarrassment. What can people do to you? NOTHING!

I've been considering removing HDD from my laptop, smashing the drive, putting it in water for some time and then dumping it outside, not close to my place. Then I realized that I don't really have too much to hide. A collection of mp3s? I don't even watch/download porn. And like @MyStateKilledMe said, why care if you're going to be dead anyway? Unless you have some stuff which would harm the ones you care about. Or just destroy it in order for your family hating you not being able to use/sell it.

If you're worried enable encryption on your android/iphone and it would be inaccessible for other people. If you have windows you can use bitlocker.

I have some books about suicide and my internet history containing this and other suicide forums. The books are in the cloud, but I keep a local copy for easier reading. I just don't wanna more pro-lifers finding out about this website (and even though most my relatives don't know English, suicide is a very recognizable word).

Files can be recovered.

I'd like to download something that 'fries' my computer so that it cannot be looked into.
Anything out there anyone knows about?

Eraser deletes files by overwriting them again and again, that makes them unrecoverable.

Just delete all the files you want to and use some program to "wipe free space". This will not allow them to be recovered. Maybe do the process more than once for further guarantee. I used to use CCleaner for this.

I also think about this. I just don't want to leave behind anything when I die, like I never exist. I thought to make a small soft that will wipe out all data on startup if X days are passed from the date, just in case if my attempt fails.

Meh, I don't care if they gain access to my personal data. They will discover nothing but weird porn and my awkward posts on electronics enthusiasts' forum. The only thing that matters to me is to erase any traces leading to this site. I don't want my family to prejudice against sanctioned suicide forum when I'm dead. The hard drive on the computer I left in Poland is encrypted with RSA algorithm so there's no way to decipher it without knowing the password. I'll just do the same thing here and that's all. Without password and very powerful quantum computers they can do nothing.
Also here's a useful tip : If you can, before suicide remove your RAM memory from your computer and leave it somewhere warm. This way you are safe from cold boot attack.

Yeah, it's what I've done. Trust me, people will snoop if they have the chance and that's just not fun for anyone.

I don't think 99.9% of peope would be able to or want to or know about how to freeze smeone's ram and extract info this is overlill , even if they did modern hardwares have hardware encryptions and TPMs and some other fancy stuff which makes it very hard to do things locally unless you're dad is NSA with infinite budget and is very curious about what you do :))

Just to be safe, please don't download any random software. If I were to get rid of a hard disk, I would first overwrite it with DBAN and then physically destroy it. An iPhone can be set so that the device automatically resets itself if the wrong PIN is entered repeatedly. Whether the data can still be retrieved, I don't know. I guess so. Can't speak for Android. Clouds aren't secure (as long as the data on them isn't encrypted).
