There is no point to that kind of math. Suicide attempt by a gun is not something you should even think about surviving. There's no quality of life to talk about there even if you somehow survive both. If you are unsure about your method don't do it.

And there is no surviving a true gunshot wound to the heart. It's just gonna take longer to die. Not very long though. Blowing out the brainstem is faster, therefore better.

I know that people survive headshots, but it's important to note that not all brain areas are necessary for life. Those that survive headshots are always those that lost less important brain areas, mainly in the frontal cortex. There is not one documented case of someone surviving a gunshot to the brainstem. Brainstem regulates breathing and heart function as well as being crucial for consciousness. Destruction of the brainstem is invariably fatal.

It doesn't work 100 percent because its subject to human error: ignorance, being too drunk and flinching being the most obvious ones to me. Weapon choise matters too.

Destroy the brainstem and you die, no exceptions. You are also gonna blow you head almost clean off if you do it right

Well, I'll just say, once your heart is fucked up past a certain point, it's game over because blood = life. And soldiers and police officers are trained constantly to aim for the chest. And then they have the muscle memory to instantly pull out a firearm and shoot you in the chest, the second you reveal yourself as a threat. In real combat situations, nobody really goes for head shots like in video games. LOL

Soldiers and police are trained to fire at the centre of the target to optimise the chances of a hit. For a standing crouching man this is the lower chest/solar plexus area. Incapacitating the target is what is required, not necessarily instant death. Indeed, in military terms, a badly wounded enemy is a better result than a dead one.

Military snipers and police precision riflemen (same thing) may be called upon to kill instantly in some circumstances, and then they shoot at the head on a level with the mouth which usually results in the medulla being hit.

Because they often work in hostage situations and a shot to the brain stem is immediately incapacitating. The effects are so severe and immediate that they lead to what is called flaccid paralysis. They just drop like a sack of potatoes.

I was taught that aiming for the chest is so that you have a greater chance of hitting the enemy in combat but I also thought there was another reason because the heart is so vital for the human body. I was thinking snipers, aim for the head because they are usually sent in to deal with enemy snipers, therefore both sides, only really expose their heads, once in awhile. Because they don't fight like standard infantry.

Makes sense. Being hit in the heart, would still give someone enough time to take action. Not much time but enough time.

Dave Duerson, NFL safety who played for the Chicago Bears, shot himself through the heart specifically so that his brain could be studied for the effects of the CTE which led to his depression and ultimate demise (and is common among former NFL players). Selfless act, IMO.

I hear you. Does it really matter if it takes 10 seconds or a minute or two? A chest shot rather than a head shot would subject whoever finds me to less psychological trauma. And my family, who will have to identify me.

Of course, then I start reading about the ways a chest shot can go wrong - bullet deflected by the sternum or ribs, etc.

As a cpr instructor, I know where the heart is. If I can obtain a gun, the heart is where I'd aim for. Brain is too elusive unless you have a rifle and know that method is fool proof. I've seen too many survivors...

I'd personally go for the head, as close to the brainstem (if not exactly at the brainstem) as possible. This is to ensure success and also I will be using a shotgun with 00 buckshot if I CTB. As for the heart, I'm a bit less confident as I will likely still be conscious and suffer a lot of pain (even for less than a minute) before dying. Speaking of the heart, there is a video of a Turkish man who did that with a shotgun to heart. If I remember, he survived a bit more than a few minutes (most likely didn't hit the heart exactly), at least long enough to get to the hospital before he died of his injuries.

With a long gun, especially with a shotgun, through the mouth and barrel as far back as possible while pointing at a slight angle downward. Also, tilting your head down helps too, to get a more precise angle. If using a rifle, the similar thing, but requires more precision. The hydrostatic shock of the bullet will do most of the damage though.

If using a handgun, you could aim behind the ear or in the mouth. I still prefer the mouth since it is easier to control for me and has less dense matter (bones) to go through.
