Rating Anti-Emetics

Having IBS and being on HRT I've dealt a lot with nausea. And well, it doesnt disappear with meds just like pain with morphine.
I'll rank anti-emetics worst to best :

-metoclopramide: made me throw up. Did the opposite of what it's meant to.
-metopimazine: rarely made it better. Threw up on occasion.
-olanzapine: prevented after tolerance break. Made me fall asleep and wake up hungry. Threw up twice on it.
-zofran/ondansetron : definitely get this one if you aren't on anything else. It takes 2 hours for full effect and works quite well. I never threw up on it although in some occasions I still felt very nauseous.
-mirtazapine: the first time I took it I fell asleep and the nausea went away. After 4 weeks I had its full effects and I'm back to normal me who doesnt feel sick all the time (for now). Never threw up on it.

In my case, estrogen makes me nauseous. I suggest to be aware that it can be worse at a certain time in the month if you have periods.

Never take more than one of these meds at a time, there is a risk of serotonin syndrome, and you'll puke for sure.

PPH says that metoclopramide is "very effective".

I'd like more info on mirtazapine as the sole anti-emetic /or/ taking mirtazapine with something else - watching this thread. I imagine there's quite a few of us that already take mirtazapine for other things than nausea.

well wizzie says it depends. having tried it myself and knowing people who did too, it's really YMMV. it has proved itself very iseful however in diseases like gastroparesis (slow gastric emptying). You can also refer yourself to reviews on drugs.com

i agree that this one tends to have varying outcomes too; all people are not as sensitive to it. On rare occasion it might even make you puke instead of preventing it (just like meto for me)

I appreciate this because the whole meto situation has seemed weird to me, like it's presented as this miracle AE but then you find out some people have a terrible reaction to it, and of the ones who don't, a percentage of them (possibly most of them) puke anyway. I actually have access to ondansetron but apparently since it doesn't work from the dopamine angle it's useless, just like all the OTC AE's.

Maybe that's why many people prefer Domperidone, because it has less side effects than Meto and is easier to get.

Thanks for making this thread and mentioning these things I actually just recently made a thread trying to compare Zofran with Meto I know they're two different kinds of drugs but they're supposed to do the same thing I guess which is to help with nausea but I've read that Zofran is way better at helping with nausea I guess so I'll be taking that with the intention of helping the nausea and the Meto for the gastric emptying and hopefully for its affects of stopping nausea.

thats because stan's guide says so. but it's not entirely true: 5HT-3 antagonists (such as ondansetron) are very strong. they're used in the treatment of nausea and vomiting in chemotherapy.

Because most AEs are just placebo crap. D2 antagonists actuzlly *do* something. they might not know about 5HT-3 and even then, it is hard to get.

I found Zofran to be totally useless for my nausea. I have an endless supply of it. I tried one meto, and nausea was completely gone. My doctor told me the side effects are rare and occur more often with prolonged use.

thanks for confirming - AEs are really YMMV. In my case it's the opposite, and all info here has to be taken with a grain of salt. also i think it also depends on the cause of the nausea. what was yours?
