I remember my mum dosing us up with promethazine (Phenergan ™) back in the 1970s for my horrible travel sickness or just for some peace and quiet every now and then.
In the UK, NHS psychiatric facilities are replacing benzodiazepines with this cousin of Chlorpromazine for anxiety and sleep. It's far less addictive, although tolerance builds in the same way it does with the less favoured "azepams". The most notable factor is the exceptionally high LD50, meaning you would need to take hundreds for any hope of lethality.
On the ward, patients are generally issued 25mg for anxiety and 50mg before bed. I must say that I was really pleasantly surprised by how effective it was, with a rapid onset and enabling a long, unbroken sleep, without any hangover effect.
*Note that in the UK, the drug is distributed in a syrup or capsules containing promethazine alone, unlike the combination of codeine and promethazine found elsewhere.
I had no difficulty persuading my GP to give me a generous prescription. In addition, I was able to buy it here without a prescription from regular online pharmacies.
As I mentioned, it's used as an antiemetic in addition to the sedation. Not only is it widely available for travel sickness, but it's commonly used post surgery, to counter nausea resulting from the anaesthetic.
