I thought some here may well appreciate this Ted talk. If only we lived in more evidence based driven society ideas such as this would not be vilified based on nothing but contempt for the poor. We all deserve better than enshrined suffering that only benefits the few.
Like a lot of things we don't get what we deserve. Once I became financially destitute I saw first hand how people, even those who know you, can turn their impression of you instantly. People blame and hate victims because it scares them. They don't want to face the possibility it can happen to them so it must be your fault. Fuck people.

This is a good video @Misanthrope and thanks for sharing. :) Yes, it sucks that most of society is programmed to think and fed bullshit such as that if one is poor and failed in life, it is solely that person's fault. While I never became homeless, I have been close a few times and had I not had a social support system at the given times, I could have easily fallen through the cracks.

The past that shape us. The situation that limit us. The inevitabilities that guide us. We all have the potential to be anything we want. But all we can be is ourselves. Words are beautiful because we can twist it into whatever we want it to be. Can something this malleable represent anything at all? The lies of words. The truth of words. Are mere choice we make.
This tweet from someone on twitter really sums up the the myth of *hard work *
"The hardest working person in the world likely lives in poverty. Hard work almost never translates to wealth. But exploitation of labor often does. The hard work myth needs to die"

It wont because the one who spread that myth are the one thats doing the exploiting.
How else are you going to keep them in line and not questioning the life they have right now? By telling them a story where their dreams can come true if they work harder. Yet we all know who benefit the most from that.

Hard work leads to wealth in a society it just isnt distributed very equally at first or ever unless some form of progressive taxation and welfare systems are implemented. Hardwork literally leads to wealth it just depends on who gets it. the world is more equal than ever and thats a fact.

But. What is hard work? Everyone's version are different. There are no way to measure it. Something this intangible cannot be use to justify or measure anything nor convince anyone.

Then everyone are hard working. As long as human live. They're striving toward their goals. However big or small. That pretty much render the whole concept of "hard work" meaningless.

What define effective? Its another thing that differ from person to person. There are no effective way in living and striving towards one's goals. Who can judge that? Who can define that? Base on what? The concept of "effective" is as intangible as the concept of "hard work".

But you wanted to get your last statement in. If someone doesn't want to debate then they just don't do it...they don't declare it like shutting the door in someone's face after speaking their part.

Unfortunately when you implement taxation which is theft by the way. What you're doing is punishing the successful, hard working, competent, and welfare is often taken advantage of by people who just want free shit or to not have to work. Welfare tends to increase irresponsible behaviors like out of wedlock kids who are 30 times more likely to be abused then kids with both bio parents married in the home. The very rich are able to protect themselves from taxation so what ends up happening is the burden falls on the middle class the most which then wipes out the middle class. Then you are left with the very rich and most of everybody else will be working class or poor. Under socialism/communism u end up with the wealthy ruling elite and everyone else impoverished like in Venezuela. It takes awhile for it to collapse so it might appear to work until other people's money runs out and nobody sees the point in working because progressive taxtation keeps punishing the producers. It discourages people from being productive, investing, creating jobs when u steal their earnings.
Then its back to what I said earlier. Everyone have different view on it. No one can judge or measure hard work and "effectiveness". Also base on what way can they judge? Base on what? Feelings? Can feelings be an effective way to actually judge things? No no no. Human pay more for things they like. That appeal to them. Its just simple as that. Also this is not a debate. This is a statement. Whether you agree or not. Not my problems. I am not trying to convince you. Also why should I listen to you? You shouldn't had reply if you dont want to hear mine. Grow up. If you cant handle simple discussion then stay away from forums. Its simply disgusting talking to people like you who run away like this. At least know how to end it gracefully. My bad trying to talk to extremely shallow and superficial simple naive thing like you to begin with. Silly me trying to talk philosophy I doubt you can even understand that.
But you wanted to get your last statement in. If someone doesn't want to debate then they just don't do it...they don't declare it like shutting the door in someone's face after speaking their part.
I am simply talking about philosophy and he acted like a spoiled brat. Just tell you how much of a character he have. Thank you for standing up for me regardless. People who cannot bear to hear the words of others shouldn't thrown their own words out there. If they dont want replies then they shouldnt speak. Everything follow cause and effect. I will never understand people like that. Just because they want it to stop it will. Ho boy no no one have to give us what we want.
I didn't watch it but I had to put thoughts about it down lol! I'm not a fan of all the TED talks but some of them I think have some truth or some are true but many leave out the full scope of facts and variables. I think poverty can originate from mental illness, very low IQ, government intervention into what otherwise would be a fully free market, child abuse which can cause cognitive and emotional problems interfering with holding a job, ability to learn, forming healthy lasting relationships, if you aren't able to consider long term consequences or plan longterm, definitely differences in abilities, talent, personality traits. Not having been educated well about economics and making decisions early to prevent yourself from falling into poverty. The purposeful creation by governments to create a permanent underclass. Without keeping a permanent underclass of impoverished people we have little need for massive government.
Why are you (royal you) talking about it, again? How is being poor cannot result from the lack of... character, whatever that means? Is it not the one but the other? How is the lack of resources not inclusive of the lack of character? It was amusing to watch and read... but the point went over my head, I think.
