Partial hanging with no trousers

My brother killed himself few months ago via partial hanging by tying rope to his student accommodation ensuite door handle and then running it over the door. I got the report from the police few days ago. One detail that I cannot seem to make much sense of is he had a shirt on but no underwear/pants/trousers. Completely bare at the bottom.

I have seen him use this website before which he assured me was just because of morbid curiosity and nothing else (I know really silly of me but if he's at peace now I am content with that), and looking at his phone after his passed I know he has been planning this meticulously for a good long while. So I know that he's not bottomless because he had a sudden mental health crisis.

All I can come up with is either
1. logistics - was gettng caught on the door handle or he didn't want it to slip once he passes out leading to a failed attempt
2. thinking of clean up - loss of bowel/bladder control and having soiled trousers on
3. he didn't think it would happen and was doing a trial run and accidentally succeeded?

I was just wondering if some of you might be abe to shed some light on this?

To preface this this is in no way insinuating anything about your brother. When you look at pants off hangings post mortem, one of the most immediate forensic assumptions is that it is a result of autoerotic asphyxiation. As in someone getting off to hanging themselves. It's entirely possible he just didn't want to soil a pair or it was to throw other people off. Many people want to make their death look like an accident. For some people, their death looking unintentional (like sexually), puts less guilt on them with the act. Others on this forum have suggested ideas such as simply getting extremely intoxicated on a high rise roof and jumping, but appearing like they accidentally fell off, stuff like that.

It's also possible it was a trial run, after a while you will struggle to physically get up/ undo everything after circulation is cut off. When I've test hung partially I've blood choked myself and in only a couple of seconds, it feels like you've got a headache and you start to feel extremely dizzy. It was hard for me to get up. It's possible things were getting caught as well. I'm sorry for your loss and I hope that you at least get some insight and understanding. I'm sorry if my comment was too morbid

My first thought was also that he was trying to make it look like an accidental death from autoerotic asphyxiation. Someone being found hanging without pants really does make it look like an accidental death, but since you know it was likely purposeful we could assume anything done to make it look accidental was staged. Did your brother often seem concerned about other people's emotions, and especially his influence on them? Did he seem like the type of person who'd want to lessen the impact his death had on others, even at the expense of his own pride? If so, I think this line of reasoning follows.

There's also the possibility that he was genuinely getting off, even if the primary purpose of hanging himself was to die. This is how I plan to go out, personally, as someone who both wants to die and also finds asphyxiation enjoyable. But it'd be impossible to make this assumption about your brother without knowing what kind of things he was into erotically. I think without knowing this, the more likely thing is what I said before about him staging it to look that way.
