Only one word in english

Is there only one word for suicide in english. Because in German we have three words: Suizid, Freitod und Selbstmord.

If you'd search for "suicide synonyms" online, you'd find all the other words.

I like "Freitod", seems like a good way to describe suicide if "frei" stands for free(dom).

Very interesting question.
"Suizid" is technically not a "real" German word, as it is directly derived from the Latin "sui caedere", i.e. "(to) kill oneself".
"Freitod" is a poetic variant coined by Nietzsche.
I know of two other synonyms: "Selbsttötung" and the archaic "Selbstentleibung/Entleibung".

I agree with hahabye that "Freitod" is the best variation. "Selbstmord" (=murder of the self) carries a negative connotation, while the others are entirely neutral. "Freitod" is not only free of any judgmental undertones, but underlines the determination behind this action, i.e. the person wanted to kill himself out of their own free will.

In French exists a highly poetic expression for suicide: "Se donner la mort", which may be translated as "(to) give oneself death".

We dont use the word Freitod very often.

I think most people here say Selbstmord. I dont say Selbstmord, because it literally means Selbst= Yourself and mord= murder. And the word mord insist that this action was something criminal.
