  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

This is a topic that has always caught my attention, and I thought it would be interesting to share the information. Each country will likely have its own action protocol, but it can be helpful to get a general idea of how they collect data to compile statistics and record each suicide death..

(I'm attaching the PDF in Spanish since my English may have errors)

-----------------------
On suicide research and statistics (in Argentina)

- The responsible for compiling the information is the: Ministry of National Security (National Criminal Statistics)
- Through the: Early Suicide Warning System of the National Criminal Information System (SAT-SS)
- The crime statistics report on completed suicides throughout the country is elaborated annually. (1)(2)(3)

----- National Criminal Information System (SNIC)

The SNIC is a data collection and consolidation system for the analysis of statistical criminal information in Argentina. Its purpose is to provide information on alleged criminal acts reported by provincial police forces, federal security forces, and other official reporting entities throughout the Republic of Argentina.

This system consists of a total of five modules:

- SNIC Criminal Acts
- SAT* Property
- SAT* Intentional Homicides
- SAT* Road Deaths
- SAT* Suicides

* SAT: Early Warning System

----- Suicide Early Warning System (SAT-SS)

They are another component of the National Criminal Information System, whose purpose is to gather more detailed information on certain types of crimes. The SAT modules systematize information from police investigations, just like the SNIC; however, unlike the latter, they are more detailed, as they record data related to the individuals involved (victims and alleged perpetrators).

Specifically, the SAT-SS module collects information on completed suicides in Argentina, with data on the context, individuals involved, and methods used. This type of record enables qualitative analysis of the phenomenon, as well as its quantification.

Although suicide is not a crime, its inclusion in the SNIC responds to the need to record all types of violent deaths involving police forces.

All suicide incidents and victims are recorded by the jurisdictional police forces, the Argentine Federal Police, the Argentine National Gendarmerie, the Airport Security Police, and the Argentine Naval Prefecture.

-----SAT-SS database (4)

It allows for the identification of the number of completed suicides, at the event level, with data on the context, people involved, and methods used. The database has an identifying number for each event. The same database also includes records for individuals who committed suicide.

Only information about victims is included (not witnesses); in the case of incidents involving more than one victim, the incident data is repeated for each victim.

Variables (or fields) contained in the SAT-SS user database:

- Event ID: identifies the people involved in the same event (victims and defendants)
- Suicide identification code
- Gender / sex
- Age
- Identification of the incident: reported by provincial forces / federal forces (GNA, PSA, PFA, PNA, and SPF)
- Province, department, locality
- Year, month, day, time
- Type of place: Public road, Private residence, Railroad tracks, Jail or police station, Countryside/wasteland/rural area, Commercial establishment, Health/mental health facility, Nursing home, Hotel/Motel/temporary lodging, River/canal/stream/sea/dam, Undetermined, Other place
- Modality: Firearm, Knife/cutting weapon, Submersion in pool/sea/river, Poisoning, Hanging/Suffocation, Throwing oneself into the void, Throwing oneself onto railroad tracks, Throwing oneself under a vehicle (truck/car/bus), Incineration, Undetermined, Other modality
- Reason for registration: Civil call, Police intervention, Court order, Other, Undetermined
- Suicide class: Civilian, Police (on duty, off duty, retired, detained), Private security, Other security force, Detained civilian, Undetermined
