I've tried Benadryl, something fancier than Benadryl that was really just strong Benadryl, and Klonopin. The Benedryl-ish options just made me tired, but didn't help with the anxiety. I was prescribed my Klonopin to take as-needed... and had mixed results. It would immediately relieve my anxiety, but it also led to me falling asleep in random places I felt comfortable even at low dosages (in a sunny spot on the floor, a corner of my stairwell, etc) and I found that the next day, when I wasn't going to take the Klonopin, was 10x harder. It was like that wave of anxiety had been building during the time the drug was making me feel better, and then crashing down around me as soon as it was out of my system. Now I'm taking a beta blocker, which only slows my heart rate, and doesn't have the same impact on my thought processes.
Anecdotally I will say anyone I know who takes anti-anxiety prescriptions like xanax or klonopin on a daily basis has a hell of a time functioning without them later on down the line.
