I was able to see a doctor to get some medication. They have me on sertralline for my depression and trazadone for sleep issues (50mg each). Any of you have experience with these medications?
I tried many medication for my depression and Sertraline was one of the best for me. I really like it. It was no life changer - my depression is chronical - but it helps. But in my case it causes sleepless nights... I need medicine for sleep. I hope it works for you!!!
I tried trazodone and it worked incredibly well for sleeping but did nothing for my depression. In situations where sleep is urgently needed, in my case after months of sleep deprivation, it's a good medication. I stopped taking it because of the downsides. Personally I felt not really refreshed after sleeping with the medication and kept having really weird dreams, it made me feel sluggish at times and I also experienced some weight gain too. Keep in mind, however, that these were personal experiences and might differ per person, per dose, and what you take in combination with this medication
I did some research and trazodone has different dosage requirements when used as a sleep agent (50-100mg) or antidepressant (150 or higher). Drugged feeling post-sleep, lucid dreaming, and weight gain seem to be common side effects. I'm taking trazodone tonight about half an hour before bedtime and probably hold off on the marijuana tinctures that dealt with managing my anxiety levels in the past so I could sleep.
Sertraline did nothing for me at all. I've taken trazodone for over 20 years. I have HUGE lifelong sleep problems. I am prescribed 450 mg of trazodone each night. That's actually over the recommended daily amount. (I take other sleep meds too). The trazodone has never had any impact on my depression, but it does help with sleep stuff. Even at this wicked high dose, the side effects have been little, if any. Those are my experiences.

Sertraline gave me chronic fatigue. Everyone's different, but for me it would be unimaginable to be on Trazodone at the same time. I've been on Trazodone when Fluoxetine gave me insomnia, though. It did get me to sleep. The worst problem I could attribute to it was dry mouth, which went away after a while.

Well, my experience thus far with sertraline is manageable. Had the usual side effects on the first three days or so and disappeared on day four. The trazodone has made me drowsy but I still wake up in the middle of the night and not able to go back to sleep. This might be attributed to my acute sleep disorder rather than the trazodone. I may need something stronger like Ambien or valium. My anxiety seems worse in the morning and I'm not sure which of the medication is the cause if at all. I'm experiencing some problems being able to urinate but I don't know if it's a side effect of the trazadone or my prostate. One thing I'm definitely dealing with is the withdrawal symptoms from using THC tinctures for two years to sleep. Last night I got cold sweats but I don't know if its sertraline, trazodone or the THC withdrawals as they all can be responsible for cold sweats at night and sometimes during the day. I'll ask my psychiatrist and maybe she puts me on something else.
