Maybe this post is stupid. I know this charcoal isn't the best, but I'm wondering if it would work or how bad of an idea it is. Its Kingsford match light charcoal. I think it has lighter fluid in it so it lights instantly. Is this a good enough option? Or is it too impure? Dangerous? Unreliable for a few reasons probably but I thought I'd ask

This post isn't stupid because it is an important question that can help everyone else out there looking into this method. Briquettes are not recommended because they might contain other sort of coal, wood pieces and "trash" that is pressed into them. That could lead to permanent production of SO2 in small amounts besides other unwanted small amounts of smoke that build up in the room causing unwanted side effects. SO2 builds sulphurous acid which is unpleasant. The lighter fluid itself could also produce unwanted products, that pollute the air additionally, even after the coal is glowing.

I read not to use grillstarter at all, better use paper/cartoon to light the charcoal. And this sounds logic to me.

Well I guess any charcoal can produce enough CO but it's more about unwanted side effects that we want to avoid.

Thank you. Do you know what options may be more pure? I read that royal oaks briquettes were good, but then I also see people saying briquettes arent as good like you said. I cant find enough consistent or straightforward answers unfortunately

I would look for regular charcoal made of pure wood with no additives. That's what i personally would look for.

Well the other option would be sulfuric acid + formic acid, there's an apparatus described in the PPH, but dunno if you can get hands on these acids easily. That would produce pure CO
