Life can feel like a fate worse than non-existence because suffering is unavoidable while happiness is uncertain and fleeting. Every day brings new struggles, whether it's physical pain, emotional distress, or the weight of simply existing. There's no guarantee that things will improve, but there's always the possibility that they could get worse.
The endless cycle of needing things—food, shelter, money, companionship—creates stress, and failing to meet these needs only leads to more suffering. In non-existence, there are no needs, no fears, and no struggles. The feeling of being unwanted, uncared for, or betrayed by the people who should have been there makes life even more unbearable. If no one truly cares, then what is the point of enduring? Non-existence eliminates the possibility of being hurt by others.
Life is also filled with uncertainty. At any moment, things could take a turn for the worse, and that fear alone is exhausting. The thought of aging, losing more, or suffering even greater hardships makes existence seem like an ongoing punishment. In death, there is no fear, no waiting for the next painful event, and no possibility of further loss.
Perhaps the greatest injustice is that no one consents to being born. People are thrown into life without choice, forced to endure suffering, expectations, and the weight of simply existing. There is no fairness in it—just an obligation to survive until life decides to let go. No one asks for this burden, and yet, they have to carry it.
Even for those who find meaning, everything eventually fades. Work, relationships, accomplishments—none of it lasts, and in the grand scheme of things, it all feels like a pointless game that no one truly wins. Non-existence removes the need to play at all. If nothing matters in the end, why suffer through it?
