Last thread I've found with this topic was posted back in Feb. I'm also young enough that I barely remember how Forums actually work, so forgive me for any first time poster blunders/misuse of etiquette.

I've got about 7k in my savings between a small 401k (1.8k), a brokerage account(3.5k), another brokerage account(2ish k), and a savings account(1k).

Seeing as I want to leave enough in my estate for a cremation which takes at least 4k (Or so google tells me) what can I do with 3kish for my last day/week? I feel like ticking things off a bucketlist is the most commonly thought of thing. As for what remains for me, I wanted to publish a novel, fall in love, and losing my virginity. The first I've pretty much already done. The second is most likely impossible. The third I can do with a trip to Nevada. Does anyone have any other idea or fantasies they'd like to live out before they ctb? I don't have the most money but I'm kinda looking for a last hurrah beforehand. (preferably one that would leave me enough money to purchase a firearm in Nevada, since I won't be able to take any of mine with me if I fly)

Lol I feel that, man. That's kinda why I made this post. I guess if I had more things to add to this list I wouldn't really want to ctb. I feel like a lot of people would say "skydiving, hanggliding, traveling, etc." but obviously none of that would really make that much of a difference to me. Just looking for some unique ideas to try beforehand that aren't the normal generic bs.

You should watch the film Griffin and Phoenix(1978)with Peter Falk and Jill Clayburgh---Both play dying people and each do their bucket lists.....highly dramatic ending

I'm in the US, too, and you can get a cremation done for under $1K. Now that's only for the cremation. If you want your ashes to be placed somewhere, you need to buy a spot for that, too. And a marker for your final resting place costs money, too. And if you want a service of some kind for family to grieve, that costs more, too. Then there's the cost of the vessel for the ashes, which isn't required if you just want you ashes scattered somewhere. But, then again, that's illegal in most places, so you have to make arrangements with family members, or a friend, you trust ahead of time to make sure that happens. There are more "little" things that cost money that I'm leaving out, but they all add up. Honestly, it's hard for me to believe that all of that can be done for only $4K.

Wow. So most likely I'll be cremated (how else do they dispose of bodies that are unclaimed, I doubt family will foot the bill), and then where do they dispose of ashes if no one claims them? The town dump? I'm leaving soon, so this is stuff to ponder.

I'm going to spend time with my husband. Eat some great Mexican food and just enjoy my last days with him. I'm going to put in my letter to just do whatever is cheapest in disposing of my body. For all I care they can throw me in the dumpster. I don't deserve anything better. I'm thinking I'm going to start writing my goodbye letter soon.

Not necessarily. If you have money to take care of your final expenses, say in a bank account, then that money will be used for just that. If you have no money, then it falls on the family to take care of your final expenses. If there is no family, or none of them are able or willing to step up and take care of your final expenses, then what usually happens is that the city, or town, you live in, at least in the US, steps in and buries you in as a "cost effective" way as possible. They still make "cheapo" caskets, which really no one ever gets, because they're cheapo. I can only speak for the city I live in, but I know for a fact that, as I said, if no one, including the deceased, is able to pay for final expenses, the city takes care of it as cheaply as possible, including a burial plot in a city owned cemetery, which includes some kind of crude grave marker, if I remember right. I don't know of any cities, or towns, personally, that cremate people who are unable to pay their own final expenses, but there may be somewhere. I'm not sure, but it may have something to do with some religions having objections to cremation, but I don't think any religions have objections to burial. Except maybe a few Native American Indian tribes.

There's another way to handle things, but it involves getting a last will and testament made up, at least some type of legal document will be required. Many teaching hospitals have programs where you can donate your body to them after death so that up-and-coming doctor trainees can "learn" about human anatomy. If you go that route, the hospital, as a thank-you, will normally cover cremation and disposal of your remains when they are "finished" with you and it won't cost you a cent. Maybe you can check with a nearby hospital like this and see what is required to make that happen. It may be as simple as signing some kind of form. I don't know.

That is a really good idea about the body donor program. My university has one and it takes care of all the transport and cremation costs entirely. Thanks, now I think I'll apply for it.

Another thought I have is, and i guess it depends somewhat on age and health, and could apply to any younger person on here, really, is to consider donating organs once deceased, so as to help others who may be in need. In your case, it could probably be coordinated right through the university I would imagine. It's not my intent to try and push that on anybody, either. It's a very personal decision for each of us to make on our own. It's merely another thought I just had.

I'd eat my favorite food and drink at my favorite restaurant, wear my favorite clothes, listen to my favorite music for old times sake. Talk to friends/family and make amends if necessary. Write a nicely crafted suicide note beforehand.

There is nothing that I want to do apart from making sure that the method does not fail. I just want to be gone. I do not really enjoy anything at all and I have had enough of living. I wish you the best with what you are doing.

A direct cremation is cheaper. It only cost me 1200 dollars. It depends where you live though. Some places are more expensive than others.

In the US, most unclaimed bodies are cremated, and the ashes are buried in a common grave.

What happens to the Abandoned, Indigent, or Unclaimed Body in America?

In the United States, when a body goes unclaimed it becomes the responsibility of the government. Unclaimed bodies are mostly cremated in the United States. Cremation lowers the cost to the government, and is more efficient for storage. The ashes are often buried in a large collective grave, or in a columbarium (above ground mausoleum for urns). Ashes may also be stored in morgues, funeral homes, medical or private storage facilities. The state usually keeps a record of the person's identity, if known, and where the urn was buried.
