Dad-of-four's death at Wirral beauty spot described as "very tragic"
The death of a much-loved postman has been described as "very tragic" by a coroner.
Phillip Sheard, 54, was found dead by dog walkers early in the morning in woods near Croome Drive, Caldy Hill on July 30.
Following a post mortem, the dad-of-four's cause of death was established as hanging.
Coroner Andre Rebello said there was "no evidence" of what Phil intended to do on the day he died, so he was unable to conclude a verdict of suicide, but accepted the doctor's cause of death as hanging.
Toxicology reports also showed evidence of medication for anxiety and mild depression in Mr Sheard's system at the time of his death.
Instead Mr Rebello recorded an open verdict, describing Mr Sheard's death as "tragic."
Mr Rebello said: "His death would have been sudden and he wouldn't have known anything about it.
"His heart would have literally stopped.
"The death is a very tragic death, but death comes to us all and it's important that his death doesn't overshadow his life."
At the time of his death Mr Sheard's girlfriend Ruth Allen paid tribute to him.
She said: "Phil sadly passed away on Monday July 30th. He worked for the Royal Mail.
"He started there about 17 years ago and there wasn't a funnier, cheerier, more smiley postman in the world.
"He made everyone laugh and the customers loved him.
"They invited him to parties and weddings by his customers. Who usually invites their postman to a wedding?
"That is how much he was liked. His colleagues at the Wallasey branch called him funny boy. He was also hard working. He was always there and always on time. They will all miss him.
"His four lovely children George, Katie, Harvey and Tilly Mint are heartbroken and devastated.
"All his family are heartbroken too. He was close to his sister Claire who will miss him. I am lost without him and heartbroken, as are my children Sarah and Jonathan."
She added: "He loved George Michael and the group Rush . He was a good gardener, painter and decorator.
"He was always willing to do a job for you. All in all he was a very well liked man and a nice guy. Heaven will be lucky to have him. Goodnight Phil , a well liked man."
