So out of curiosity I decided to talk to the crisis text line. It was terrible. I told her about my outlook on life, and first she asked if I was safe tonight, and kept asking if I had a plan and a means to kill myself.I lied and said I didn't. She then told me that I probably had anxiety, linked a breathing exercise, and asked me if I liked music. When I said yes, she just told me to go listen to music, and left. Not much better then the regular suicide hotline.

This is our only suicide hotline. Real support. Real understanding. They want to take this away from us and leave us with nothing but these useless "hotlines."

This is why I won't even bother. I know I want to die anyway and I don't want to be on anyone's radar.

I only did it because people were saying they were "so much better" then the regular hotline, and I wanted to see if that was so, I made sure not to give them anything they could hospitalize me for

I've also tried one here in Brazil one time I was really feeling like it. It was laughable. The girl was so unprepared I wonder if they ever helped someone...

I have to say, I have once used an online chat crisis line here and in was 1. An actual person and 2. They actually were good! I obviously didn't tell them anything that could get me hospitalised however they did bring me down from the hysterical mess that I was.

Everything recommends talking to the suicide hotline when you're suicidal and every time I see it, I die inside. I rather spill my feelings to my amazon echo than talk to them. They literally only care if you're about to kill yourself and nothing else. :aw:

I was just about to say my alexa gives me more help than a suicide hotline ever did. I'm so lame I made her some "commands" which are just scripted conversations I have with her:,)

Is that the same as chatbot?
I used to have ridiculous endless "conversations" with it.
I agree that hotlines have limited usefulness. You can't really tell them the truth about how you're feeling. That's the best part of SS, the relief you get from having a safe place to express the things you can't say anywhere else.

I understand how you feel. Unfortunately they really don't care very much about our happiness or suffering. All they care about is preventing suicide, because that benefits them in some way.

I tried using one of those chat AI things that was an app (I think it was an egg or something?) and the poor AI got SO confused after maybe 3-4 sentences between the two of us. ;-;

Its completely scripted. They teach you how to have to conversation in 5 steps, and if you are having a hard time answering someone they have prompts/ auto fill reponses.
These people are paid to do this to and you get. "yea, go listen to music or some shit, bye."
Its actually all volunteer except for a few paid staff. So the quality definitely isn't there because they basically just give you a crash course on what to say

I'm sorry It's not really an actual conversation but I set a list of commands for her:,) for example...

Me: "Alexa, I'm sad"
Alexa: "Sh*t me too b*tch"
Alexa: *Turns all lights blue, Plays spotify playlist I made titled "I'm sad".

Me: "Alexa, Today is not a vibe"
Alexa: "Shoot I feel that"
Alexa: *Turns lights to disco setting* *Plays my playlist that sets a 'vibe'*

It's definitely not fool proof or a full conversation but it does make me smile each time:,) Heading robots swear is half the fun because she's so proper haha

I'm so seriously tempted to text or call (maybe both) and offer up some advice on how to really speak to someone who is literally on the edge, as they so obviously need some help In this department. How long is it going to take for them to realize this scripted, half assed attempt at "help" is only convincing those who reach out to actually follow through with whatever plan they have? It seems like more of a confirmation than a deterrent. Perfect example of someone doing the least while claiming they're helping and doing good in the world. Half wit shits. We should give them a copy of the handbook and let it take care of itself.

I've phoned the Samaritans and other helplines in Ireland. I found them helpful within their limitations of being staffed by volunteers with limited training, and that we had never talked before. The ones staffed with actual therapists were very helpful but are bound by their code of conduct.
I don't know what you want or are expecting. They are not providing therapy. Their sole purpose is to provide a listening ear to a vent, a maybe get you to reconsider an immediate plan and guide you more structured providers if available.
They cannot help you beyond that. It's unfortunate that in some places either by law or religion they are required to send emergency services the moment suicide is mentioned.

Sometimes my satnav says "im listening" when I'm having a rant, it must detect how utterly hopeless I feel when I go on my aimless drives. Maybe I could confide in that.

my experiences has always been they can help some people but not everyone.
Depends what your situation is and they do have certain points that they have to cover. Sometimes they can be useful for opening up other avenues and opportunities for other means of help. For me though I don't waste their time and leave their lines open for someone who could really do with them as I wouldn't get anything from them myself.

you just have to be aware like @JustLosingMyself said they have codes and rules to follow and if you tell them you are going to Kill yourself or harm yourself then they have to report it. It safeguards them to from misconduct and wrongdoing (etc)
