I was chatting with "J" over the past couple days. She never announced she was going but today I received a schedule message that she was gone. And she requested me to let the forum know, but requested her username not be shared. She said she was alone in life and no one that would know she was gone.

I feel guilty in that she said maybe I could stay alive for her and she could stay alive for me, but I wasn't able to promise it. So if I had agreed she might still be here. Yet she seemed at peace in her decision and final note to me.

Like others have said- there's nothing for you to feel guilty for. You were honest. It's a big thing to promise to hold on for others. It's something I would never promise. I think it's better to be honest rather than go back on a promise. I'm sorry for your loss. It must feel strange. I'm sure she was grateful to have your support though.
