Hi! I've been a long-time lurker of this forum, and I got very excited after I found DSL a few weeks ago. I just received my order. However, I'm not sure if I'm measuring incorrectly or something, as what I've received is testing positive for sodium nitrite doing the aquarium test, but at a much lower rate than expected, and I'd be really grateful to hear some feedback.

I've tried testing different amounts of the "sodium nitrite" in water (including much smaller amounts, like is recommended), but the tests weren't picking anything up. When I started testing for a couple of grams/L, that's when I started noticing something. In particular, the test measured ~5mg/L when I put ~2g in a L of water and ~10mg/L when I put ~4g in a L of water (see picture).

I haven't been able to mentally make myself to bleed much yet to fully do the blood test yet (I hate blood, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to…). But I did happen to bleed a bit, and when I put some of the substance on the tiny bit of blood, it didn't turn brown. I'm hoping this may be because I need to test with more blood?

I have a lot of brain fog right now so I find it hard to tell whether I'm doing something wrong in my testing, or if I actually got nitrate salt or something, which I know is what DSL actually advertises. I know many other people have had success with DSL, so I think it's more likely user error on my part…. if anyone knows what I'm missing and could help, I would greatly appreciate it!

I was reading your post and curious about this part, as far as I'm aware, it is advertised by him on his platforms as nitrite and not nitrate. Are you sure you bought it from the DSL we all thought of?

Sorry, I mistyped - what I saw advertised was nitrite salt, but not pure sodium nitrite. I think I found the right DSL given the "🐱🐶" hint, which I think would otherwise be unlikely to find otherwise... plus the name you can pay to on the website was as expected based on hints on this site. But maybe I was still wrong?

not sure what's going on, but i received my DSL SN about two weeks ago and did the aquarium strip test yesterday. mine came out fine. are you definitely following the steps right?

edit: ah sorry i didn't see there was more text after the image. still not sure though. maybe message DSL to confirm what you received?

I'm glad yours turned out okay!

I think I did the aquarium test correctly. Unfortunately my brain fog has limited my ability to say for sure. What I did was the following:
  1. I first used the test strip to test to be sure there was nothing originally in the water, which there wasn't.
  2. Then I went to do the suggested method with smaller amounts from the bible, but they weren't showing anything on the test (putting a few grams in one 1L bottle, then using a syringe to take a couple mL from that bottle to put in a second bottle and testing the second bottle)
  3. Then I went and put in a couple of grams in 1 litre of water, then directly tested this, which then only tested in the 5-10mg/L range, despite the fact that it had a couple of grams per L.
Since everyone else seems to be okay, I don't know if there's something I'm not seeing here... as nitrogenous mentioned, I may not have found the right DSL too...

When you originally reached out to DSL, did they say they were sending nitrite salt or pure sodium nitrite? Because in my initial e-mail to them, they said nitrite salt and I assumed this was a cover or something. But maybe that was just me being dumb... I plan on reaching out again to DSL, but was just hoping for a bit of a sanity check that my testing method was okay and that there's nothing else that could be missing before that! Then I'll be sure to update back here

hmmm. your process for the aquarium test does sound right. multiple grams directly in the water would definitely show a result.

sodium nitrite vs. nitrite salt might be it :( they didn't say anything specific to me (we only referred to it as the "food preservative" or whatever it was). i'm not sure if DSL actually sells nitrite salt, but when i was selecting my order i accidentally selected nitrite salt at first (thinking it was referring to SN), then i realized my mistake and messaged them asking for it to be switched to SN (the "food preservative"), which they did. again, not sure if that means they actually do have nitrite salt. but it's possible... hopefully messaging them will clear it up. fingers crossed for you.

From what I'm seeing you got Sodium NitrAte and not nitrIte. There are two options on the website if you look it up. So you might've gotten the wrong one for sure.
