I think that's the problem here.

For instance, if I had been told I was gonna die at my 25s, no matter what I did, I might've tried to live life to the fullest instead of being suicidal since I was 12 because I would've just been like "Well, this world kinda sucks but, what about enjoying it? There's not much time left after all..."

That's why I've said a couple of times that if I had been born thousand of years ago and been a caveman, I would've probably had a decent life and maybe died as a hero while fighting a tiger lol.

However, we're born in this world in which unless you have any kind of illness, you'll probably live until you're 80 at least!!!!!!!!
OMG!! Who wants to be 80!? Who really wants to get older, weaker, sicker, maybe develop alzheimer and other stuff?

Isn't life just...too long?

I was reading that hunter gatherers have a completely different concept of time and age. They just live each day without thinking of the past or future. This is because they have no property so there is no need to store, record and plan things.

And yes, life is too long tbh. But people who eat well, sleep well, have good relationships, exercise well, and don't have chronic stress tend to maintain a lot of vitality well into their older years, but I think this has to be done earlier rather than later. So that's me out.

Yes. It is far too long. I was thinking this today. I've been depressed most of my life and it fills me with dread knowing I could possibly have decades filled with this. I don't understand how some people still have the will to live at old age, I see my grandparents with health conditions and I wonder how can they not want to ctb.
I think 20 years is long enough in my opinion. I feel like whatever happens after death has to be better than this and I don't know why society has to basically force people to stay alive.

Becoming 80 sounds extremely horrible for me. I think my life quality will deteriorate. Pretty sure I gonna end it before and not dying a natural death. Life became pretty hard since 5 years. I am still young I don't wanna imagine how many manic/depressive/psychotic episodes I would have to endure in the next decades. My grandmother was severly ill (just like me). I don't want to end like her.
My suicidality has an inner logic. After a psychotic episode I am very suicidal and after every episode I become more suicidal. I might be only a matter of time.

It's a little bit funny that so many members of this community fear getting old. People in general hope that they will get old as that means a long life.

Buddhist propaganda.

The problem isn't the length of life, it's the fact that while we're alive there's no way out of the mind.

Parents want us to care for them. Businesses want obedient employees and customers. Scammers want suckers. Evil people want good people to step on. Governments promote natalism because they want slaves for low wage jobs, soldiers to expand/defend, scientists for technology, advanced healthcare to increase life expectancy, artists to keep people in bliss and religion to keep people "occupied".

Yes, Buddhists did get some obvious basic stuff right. But no one who doesn't sit in a monastery all day long being waited on hand & foot by children & junior monks can afford to live only in the present moment for a significant period of time.
Btw, when did I @ you? Am I desperately trying to attract your attention? :)) You take my presence on SS way too seriously :))

I used to be scared of getting old but now that I have all these health issues that are in the process of having cures made it's taken away that fear. Being retired, 80, and listening to music and watching stuff all day doesn't sound so bad.

Well as long as we have the resources to cut short our journey, things are not that bad. I would have been suicidal even in the stone age. Life is eternally pointless. We chose between trying to pursue illusionary joy or ending it. The ONLY possible catch could be reincarnation.

I think that for the regular people without any disorders or other health problems it's not. It doesn't change the fact that if you are atheist life is kinda pointless so living longer don't make any sense. But yeah, SI is the strongest instinct of them all at the end...

Imo, it entirely depends on how much you're enjoying life, it's all about the mental experience of it. If life is really enjoyable all the time, then I don't think it could ever be to long. But conversely if life is a nightmare, then you probably want it to end ASAP - as is the case for me. As always, it's not THAT simple, e.g. some people love their life, yet they want to die after ~80 years (at least they tell me they're happy with that). I find that baffling, but then they probably find my aversion to life equally baffling.

It's cruelly long for a lot of people.

We're expected to go to school and/or work for most of our waking lives. We do shit we don't want to do just so we can afford basic necessities like shelter and food and healthcare. Meanwhile, while most of us are struggling to pay for rent or a dental cleaning, there's a few people in the world chilling on a yacht worth more than I'll ever make in my lifetime. What a scam.

We're born against our will and forced to pay a debt that is only paid in suffering.

It doesn't make sense for religious people to live long(er) either - don't they wanna get to heaven ASAP? In fact, if Christians really buy into the idea of heaven, why do they want to be treated for cancer?

As far as I know - christian dogmats make them live their life at all cost. I may be wrong, cus religion is illogical. For example christians and some of the canonical "truths" often say that something is part of Gods plan but at the same time God gave them free will to choose and nothing is determined. :smiling:

Hell yeah! Life is so much long. It's too long waiting for inevitability.

I'm 20 now and it's really depressing that if I won't ctb or get any illness I will propably suffer another 60 years.

The only possitive thing is that if we will be able to live that long, we will die naturally and it seems like the most peaceful death ever.

I think it depends. I always wanted to die and couldn't understand why people would want to live for so long. Then I found love and became a step father and suddenly I understood.

I wanted to live for them,to see the kid grow up,to experience things as a little family.

Thats all gone now and now I see no future for myself. Everything feels pointless.
